6MM BRA 300 yds 80Gr Bullet

Nice targets mr big. Keep that up and UBR will be counting wipeouts before you know it.
Old thread but, wipeouts probably will never come into play in UBR due to the different size dots. It's a lot easier to wipe out a tiny 30 cal dot than the larger 22 or 6mm dots...fwiw. It would no longer be caliber neutral.

For reference, here is what a Barts 80 Grain Dominator Boat Tail looks like in a zero freebore 6 BRA. I’ve shot everything from 55 Grain Varmint bullets to 80 grain boat tails in this chamber. The long neck on the BR case is very forgiving of freebore. I’m sure that some think I’m wasting powder capacity in this chamber with an 80 grain bullet, but it shoots great at 3250 fps with IMR 8208 XBR. Mine is a 12 twist barrel.

Edit: this is actually a standard BR case that was modified to find seating depth before it was fire formed. Same neck though, so that doesn’t really matter.

That is nearly into the donut.

The donut (after it forms) is not really at the "junction", it is really above it. Even with a boattail, that is too short. Especially if you jump.

Thos split necked cases tell the story. A 104 freebore would be fine. It would put the pressure ring at about 60 percent down the neck.

I figured that I would get that from someone.

I built this rifle to shoot 55-70 grain varmint bullets which it does very well. I talked to Bart and asked him which of his bullets I should try for groups and suggested the 80 Gr Dominator Boat Tail with a slight jam. He definitely wasn’t wrong because it turned out to be the best shooting combo that I’ve tried in this rifle. The batch of brass I’m running this bullet with is on the 4th and 5th cycle with no sign of problems.

Don’t get be wrong, if I was building a rifle around 80 grain bullets, I would probably use a .50 to .060 freebore so that I would still be able to reach the lands with the light varmint bullets.

Oh I didn't mean to criticize. Obviously it works

FWIW, a 80gr fb and a 105 vld have very similar bearing surface lengths. So what works for a 105, will usually work well for the 80 fb also but you can get by with a little less. I think about .080 is ideal for them but it's just not a very critical dimension, especially with the long neck of a 6BR.

It’s a Farley action in Terry Leonard stock. 12 twist Bartlien bbl with .050 freebore and Woolums tuner. 42x NF Comp scope.
With 68s in the BRA I would start at 30 grs H322 , 29 grs LT32 or 31 grs IMR 8208 and work up from there
Have you tried, or had any success with the 88gn FB varmint Berger?

I use a .104 for pretty much everything in the BRA. Here’s a 70 grain at touch.

I say pretty much everything because I’d definitely go .035-.050 with a 68 boattail, but for most of your flat base 70s on up to 105s, it works well.

I’d be inclined to go .135 for something like the 108 elite hunter, but I try to keep the bearing surface short in the BRA, so my .104 remains the favorite.

By the way, dummy rounds are about the only use I have for this new Alpha :)

(Thanks for the pic, T.)
