what is the barrel life of the 260 rem? also how will this compare to my 6.5x284? mostly at 600 and closer. thanks

The 260 has about 20% less felt recoil than a 308. Depending on your barrel length slower powders like H-4831 or 4350 work best with the 139-142 weight bullets. Accuracy is outstanding. Your barrel life will be 3 times what you get with a 6.5/284 like they say 2500-3000 rds is normal. I've shot the 260 for 10 years and like it a lot for 600-1K matches.

Good shooting, Jim

The .260 is a welcomed caliber due to recoil and barrel life.If you hunt and shoot benchrest it may even last longer than 2500-3000 rounds.I like it and you will too. Great bullet selection too.

Larry,
The last match I shot with the 260 was a belly match at 600yds. Score was 600-41 X's. Second string I shot a 200-19X. I was impressed!
Rifle:
Gilkes Ross, 30" Krieger 1/8 twist
Load:
Remington cases. Trimed to length and neck turned to just take off any high spots.
Flash holes reamed and primer pockets squared up.
Sierra 142 MK seated .010 off the lands.
A healthy dose of H-4831sc.
Winchester LR primer.

Ive been looking at the 260 for a while im going to have a rifle built on a savage target action in the next couple weeks. From what ive found its great ballistics and barrel life. Im going to be getting a 260AI to guarentee 3000fps with 142gr bullets. Ive been talking with Jim Briggs for the last couple weeks and i origanaly called him wanting a 6.5x284, but he talked me out of one and going with 260AI. MUCH better barrel life out of a 260 than a 6.5x284, and he was saying i should see a little better barrel life with a 260AI over a 260 standard. The only thing that the 6.5x284 has over a 260AI is velocity, but a 142gr bullet flying at around 3000fps is going to be more accurate than a 142gr bullet flying at 3200 from a 6.5x284. the 260 is a much more efficient round than the x284, so i rather use less powder with a 260AI to get 2900-3000fps, that i would be getting with a weak x284 load, even though i would need more powder and with half the barrel life.

Not to mention that several mainline matches have been won by the .260.

Been thinking about this round for a while. Twist recommendations? Shooting a bullet in the 120 to 130 range? 1K competitive?

" but a 142 flying at around 3000fps is going to be more accurate than a 142 flying at 3200 from a 6.5x284. "
and this is based on????? where do you come up with this. nowadays the easiest way to say how good a caliber is, is to badmouth a different one. LOL cliffe

Used to set the current aggregate National Record for the Championships at Perry, a 2396/2400, shot by AMU's own Sgt. Sherri Gallagher this past year. I believe she shot a 200x20 on one of her 600 yard stages, but was otherwise clean on all of her rapids and prone slowfires. Shot two 9s, and a single 8 on the three offhand matches, and called them. No worries about the 260, it shoots!

From what ive been told by Jim Briggs (a guy that is shooting through his last bullet hole) is that the best accuracy with heavier .264 calibers are between 2850-2950 fps depending on how your rifle is feeling. Ive read other places that the best is going to be between 2900-3000fps. Ether way its close enough. Im not bashing the 6.5x284, its what i origanaly wanted. But after talking to a pro and getting the small differences ironed out a 260 AI is just what the doctor ordered for me. I dont expect to ever get the velocites that i could get with a x284, and at 1000 yards higher volocity could help you out more than a tiny group at 100 yards.

I have a rifle in 6.5 Creemoor and it's performed and the cartridge is everything and more that it's been made out to be. Time's coming to rebarrel it soon and I'm have a hard time choosing between 6.5 Creedmoor again and the 260AI, Lapua offering the brass for the 260 makes it more appealing than ever.

Anyway, with the Creedmoor I was able to get over 3000 FPS pushing things hard with the various 140s. It does seem like accuracy is best at the more tuned down 2850-2950 range for whatever reason. Recoil was also getting annoying having them ran that hard. I ended up settling on 2920 FPS - a load there seemed to perform well and I didn't want to mess with it.

What'd it end up costing you? You should post some pictures!
