Target Paper

Dimwit Flathead

It's the Juggernaut, Bitch!
A couple of months back there was a thread about which paper to use for targets. After some intermittent research and more than a few phone calls I came up with Bristol Vellum 57 weight. This is what the local clubs print their groundhog shoot targets on. It is available online, but to get 13X19" stuff that will run through your wide carriage printer you will need to have it cut to size. If you buy through a print shop they can have that done for you. And check the price at several places; it is not cheap office paper.

It may not be the only or the best paper for printing targets but it is pretty darn good. If any of you know of something else that works or works better please make it known. Also tell where to obtain it.

Thanks, guys.

I get mine at Staples, too. 95 weight or something heavier. It barely feeds thru my copier, but it feeds. I haven't made them in a while because I do hundreds at a sitting. I might have single fed them.

I just went and looked. 110 pound is what I use. Nice, clean holes.

The reason most br shooters get their targets from orrville is because not all paper tears the same so paper from staples may give you a .250 group and that same exact group in a registered match may be a .350 or a .185. Its hard to size up your groups for reference. Everytime i stray away from official paper the single bullet holes im used to looking at to tune are different and i chase my tail some

I buy poster board (22" x 28") by 100 packs. Cost is about .30 cents each. Thick enough not to rip in the wind. Then buy target decals to stick on them. The target decals are cheap and come from 1" to 6" sizes. I usually fold them in quarters and save for reference.

Staples also sells a 67# cover stock that works very well. It feeds through printers and copiers well. I use it in a light gray or pale blue, these colors don't reflect back as badly on bright days and seem to help me with eye fatigue. Bullets holes also cut cleanly in this paper.

I'll add one factor that enters into the perfect hole situation. Your backer has a lot to do with the perfection of the hole. Cel-O-Tex or hollow board used for sign making works well. Having black Cel-O-Tex backer works well in seeing the bullet hole.

I developed my own targets and have them printed for me by a local shop. They have some heavy paper that I believe is around 50-75 lb. Not sure but it gives me some pretty clean holes to measure.
Cost is about $1 each but they are 11x19 with 6 targets per sheet. I generally get 20 done at a time.

My paper arrived today. It's nice paper, it has a smooth side and a bit rougher side. It measures .012" thick, normal printer paper measures .004" thick. Once I get some targets printed I'll post them up.
