Tack Driver 5

I shoot 600 - 1k with a 17lb 6bra, NF 15x55
1-300 with 13.5, 30br or 6ppc. NF 15x55
1-300 10lb 30 or 6ppc, 6x scope.

This game is 330 yards with a 200yd target, score & group so it is a curious mixture of long range, short range, poa management, poi management.
Attitude management.

I've had my moments at poa management (score).
Not so good at poi management (group)
I get frustrated and just send them. Only to be disappointed in myself for not staying vigilant.

I think maybe if i shoot enough of the TD's I'll finally, one year, get close to the top.

I wonder how the 7mm or 280's would do in this game.
I'm willing to get another rifle i suppose.

I would venture to guess the few F class guys that come will be shooting short range rifles and cartridges like everyone else. You compete with a rifle designed for the match your competing in.
Just my uneducated opinion.
Mike, the overall winner, Jason Owens, was shooting a 6BRA with Barts Hammers.

That is pretty much a “Long Range” combination.

Like Speedy said in his video. If you have a combination that is considered a “accurate“, you can compete.

Which means you have to be on your best game.

It all depends for me on match type, and bullet availability.
Currently there are "NO" bullets for the shorter game. Sierra
made a good one some time back and I bought out the
remaining inventory for my 284-ELF wild cat. They are now
gone. My SA284 wild cat I shoot AAA at Ridgway Pa. with a
183gr Sierra, will shoot an inch at 500 yards. Last year for TD-5
I made a 150 gr load with a Sierra that could shoot the same
one inch at 500 yards at 3025 fps. I called it a flag cheater. I
bowed out early with equipment failure. I actually started to
use that at our UBR style shoots in an Unlimited rifle. Started
to sneak up on Jeff Gates and Jeremiah Keefe. Even pulled off
a 4-way first place tie with Keefe at a 300 yard match. It can be
done......I would be highly disappointed to see top F-Class shooters
build a special BR gun just for the TD and not use what they win
with in their world. I would expect them to shoot at least some
form of 284 Winchester or 7PRC to really earn any form of bragging
rights. Hell.....What about a 30 WSM ?? I know a guy or two.....LOL

Changing gears fellas. Working on some form of .224 cat for the
grandson and myself. I love to compete with the big stuff, but just
can't afford it's higher costs anymore, and the company's just want
to make long VLD bullets that need extreme twist rates. I'm done
with that......Winter's coming !!

I was mostly referring to the rifle setup. I bet Jason wasn't shooting a "F class" rifle.

There is a picture of Jason’s Rifle in the Results thread, post #73.
It doesn’t look much different than many of the custom Rifles I see at Tomball on any given week end.

As I said in my post. Pretty basic stuff.

I would be interested in seeing his loading set up and procedures.

I have my own ideas about what kind of rifle it takes to win a match like the Tack Driver and will be testing that theory out at TD6. To have a chance of winning the group portion, the rifle has to be able to agg at .2 moa. The shooter has to be able to read conditions nearly that well. The score portion might let you get away with a little less, but not a hell of a lot. That 200 yd ten ring ain't very big, especially at 300m.
The thing is, with score shooting, you can't make up for a bad shot by shooting better afterward. Drop three points, and they're gone forever. Shoot a big group, and a couple of tiny ones might make up for it.
About twenty years ago, I built a rifle specifically to win a 300 meter "F" class match. It worked fine. It might get the nod for this match as well, or I'll build one just for TD. We'll see. WH

Looking forward to seeing what people come up with for next year’s event. Amazing people are already planning and several are building new Tack Driver dedicated guns!

Coming from B.C. you just might set the record for longest distance traveled!

I'm only about twenty miles from Montana so I think Alex Wheeler travels at least as far. So does Hugh Williamson. I'll probably travel by way of Palm Bay, Florida. That will add a bit, but I don't think itinerary counts. I have a year to plan it out. As for rifle, I have time to figure that out too! I like building rifles, so there's that. WH
