Summer Groundhogs

My current 20 Vartarg is a trued CZ 527 American action with a #5 contour Xcaliber 11 twist 3 groove. Shoots the 35 bergers like a benchrest rifle if you can drive it. The 788 I have has been in my family for 20 some years. It was my older brothers rifle. I have modified the trigger to make it adjustable. It's a 1/2 Moa gun all day long. My 22 Fox Squirrel is built on a CZ 527 Hornet action. The 22 Fox Squirrel is a shortened and improved 22 Hornet case that is 1.10 long and holds 9.4 gr of Ramshot Enforcer with 40 Sierra Blitzkings at 2750 FPS. 175 yd squirrel headshots are easily done in good conditions. My friend Howard Farris came up with the 22 Fox Squirrel about 2007. He was a small caliber fan and loved to hunt Fox Squirrels. It's a fun little round. I've taken Squirrels, turkeys, and Groundhogs with it. Oh yeah I'm in South Western Virginia town called Saltville. I'm about 35 mins from Bristol TN. Thanks

Well that little hornet round looks cool. Do you shoot the 35's in it? I miss hunting fox squirrels. Greys are a pin in the butt. They are like a teenager with ADHD and a sugar rush. Fox squirrels remind me of groundhogs, only in trees. Tricky, sly and patient they are. I used to hun them with a 222 downloaded with Unique and a 40 grain Hornet bullet. T10 weaver on a BDL VS. It thumped squirrels really well.

Who does your work for you? I really like the scenery down there. Reminds me of PA, about 40 years ago. Nice thread, thanks for the photos. Us Groundhoggers need to keep together. For a while I thought the only shooters left hunted PD's or so it seems by what gets written.

I have shot the 35 Vmax in the Fox squirrel and they are accurate. I just like the 40s myself. I do all my own work threading and chambering barrels. I have two lathes in my shop one Enco 12x36 belt driven machine and my newest one a 1963 South Bend Heavy 10 short bed lathe that is super nice for threading and chambering thru the headstock. I think I enjoy putting barrels on just as much as shooting them. It's all a Riflesmith thing!
