Suggestions for an inexpensive rifle

Do you guys have any suggestions for an inexpensive rifle to get some practice with. Basically I want something thats pretty accurate, short so it fits in the back of my car and that is in something center fire so I can practice my hand loading. I was thinking about an older savage 340 because you can pick them up for about $250. I have optics and all the reloading stuff for 223 so I will probably stick with that. My local range only goes to 200 yards so that is where I will shoot most of the time. I just figured I would throw it out there and see if the rifle gurus think of something that I dont.

Go pick up a Stevens 200 in a 223. $259 at Academy or Sportsman's Warehouse. Upgrade the stock when funds allow. Greater starter gun with potential to upgrade.

+one from me on what Tim said plus you can easily adjust the trigger, and always get most of your money back if not satisfied.

I would say a Savage also. There's just so many after market parts and they are very user friendly if you have just a little knowledge how to work on guns. If not ask here and someone will tell you how to do it.

If not savage or stevens try the mossberg bolt line for like 300 dollars they look like they might have potential.

I do have quite a bit of expierence with savage/stevens. I have helped a good friend of mine build up 3 long range rifles based on them. I was just seeing if anyone had any suggestions that I did not think about, but I am really thinking the savage is going to be the way to go. Thanks to everyone, to anyone else who has a suggestion, keep them coming in. It will probably be a few months before i snag one because the weather sucks and I am to busy being a poor college kid.

I've found the Savage 110/10 very accurate, well made (even the older flat tops), fairly cheap and barrel changes can be done at home. The bolt heads can be changed too, for different cartridge head sizes. But, here in Aus, they are almost impossible to find used. People buy them & KEEP them!

I myself shoot a Savage model 11 in .223. This rifle, for me, is extremely accurate; shooting my reloads anyway. Dont know about factory ammo because its never had any shoot thru it. I don't remember what I paid for it; it's been awhile. However, I believe it in the $600 price range. Has the accutrigger which you can not go wrong with....

Stevens 200 in .223 or .22-250. Hard to beat the price.

Savage puts faster twists in their .224 barrels compared to say Remington so they will stabilize the plastic tipped 55 grainers.

brew,
I don't know how much your willing to spend, I bought a Tikka T3 and have never had a factory rifle even come close to being able to out shoot it, as a matter of a fact I have had a few customs that didn't shoot as well. Well under a 1/2" ;) I am not knocking Savage I have several of them and have no complaints but with the Tikka you will get a far superior trigger and way smoother bolt, stocks are still cheesy just like the savage's although you won't be able to get all the after market goodies for the Tikka like you can the Savage. There's always +s and -s to most anything, good luck.

Savage/Stevens ++++! Plus upgrades are available if/when you desire and they shoot right out of the box. The .223 is still affordable to shoot and loaded ammo is readily available.

I have a Savage 111 in .270 win with out the accutrigger and I'm very happy with it. I payed $435CAD and it came with a scope. It has a 22" barrel. Its the gun I learnt to reload with. I consistantly shoot under an inch at 100 yards. Best being about 5/8" at 100 yards. I shot a 3 shot group at 300 yards about 2 1/4" or 2 1/2". I swaped out the scope for a Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50. I think 5/8" is as good as I can shoot right now with that trigger. I'm new to the sport.

Siiri and I have been doing good. We have been out shooting a few times. Its alittle to cold and when you get in the wind its freezing. I bought my self a new rifle. Cabelas had them on sale so I figured what the hell, and bought one. Its a Savage model 12 LRPV dual port in 204 ruger. For $900 CAD I think it was a good deal. I ordered a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x 50 for it. ;D

K0na_stinky,
Awesome! That can't be classified as a inexpensive rifle, but start a new thread or pm me and let me know how it shoots :)
