Suggestions for a .222 Remington Build

I have decided that I want a .222 Remington again. I let a nice 722 with a Douglas barrel go back in the 60's. I like target shooting (100 & 200 yards) and maybe some local BR competition.

Since I do not have anything to start with the question is what to get. Probably a Remington 700 action because that is what I know. Either a 12 twist or maybe a 14 like all the older Remington's had (for 52 grain target bullets). So it really comes down to whose barrel, what chamber, barrel contour, barrel length, chrome moly or SS?

Is a barrel tuner practical on a .222 Remington?

Do as you will, but.
A custom action with a Remington foot print that will take Remington triggers can be a bargain.
Find a donor rifle for the action and then have pieces and parts left when all you want/need was the bolt and action. Then squaring and trueing everything up.
Custom should be ready to go. Just add parts that both need.
I have found asking what others may have that they will part with can be a great bargain for both parties.

I could be o.k. with a custom action. Which one would you suggest?

Here is an idea that maybe some fellows who were active br shooters in the .222 hay day could comment on. I started shooting br in the 90's with a Win M70 heavy barrel in .222. It was very accurate. The only thing I did was install a Jewell 2oz trigger and tighten the action screws. I started shooting some local and also some IBS matches. The interesting part is the barrel according to the hashtag on the new rifle said .222 16 inch twist. I would always beat some ppcs with it. I wonder if the 16 t had something to do with the accuracy? I shot 50 gr Nosler BTs.

Borden Rimrock BR. In fact, Jim may surprise you with his lead time for a full barreled action with a timed Jewell for it.

I love both my Bordens:

EDIT: If you've never thought about it, I don't think I'll build another fun/bench gun in anything except a Right bolt, Left Load, Drop Port configuration. I just love the way it drops the brass under the gun on the bench.

My response is from the angle of lip stick on a pig, so to speak. After having what I thought were “just as good as” and then having been fortunate to have shot and handled some “real mcoys “ there IS a difference.

Most, not all of us let or pocket decide what we will or won’t do.

As to a specific action maker, seems most all of them or on top of their game. It is ones preference as to why they prefer one over another.
Custom actions are like craft beers today, a large variety and none are bad, but maybe different.

Howdy !

On action choice, one consideration is whether you want or simply must have a repeater ?

Rifle application:
My best friend is an accomplished NBRSA shooter, and has had some groups submitted for potential new world records. He has 17acres w/ notable groundhog population, in NE Indiana. On his property, shots are typically 300yd less.

For his most-recent build, he went w/ a take off stainless .222Magnum that fit, indexed; and headspaced just fine on M-700SA he had. He didn't insist on a trued action, and the barrel is for a no-turn neck. Didn't really need a magazine for repeat shots, so had a fixed feed ramp installed.
He used a nice gently-used mid -70's BDL stock, that was bedded by Tom Meredith.

My point:
Don't take me wrong..... I myself haven't killed a groundhog w/ a non-custom gun; in over 43yr.
A top-tier custom rifle can be such a confidence booster when going afield, helping one anticipate great outcomes in their shooting.

At the same time, there's a lot that can be accomplished w/ a good factory rifle and beyond that; mildly customized rifles that have been fitted w/ things like "pre-fit" barrels.

What holds the most appeal, for you ?

Actually target shooting so I don't need a repeater. Want something that is capable of one hole five shot groups at 100 yards. I like experimenting and love reloading. I have a local smith that can true up a Rem 700 action and barrel it. I can handle the bedding. Custom actions are interesting. I like the right bolt/left port idea.

What about looking in The Shooters Corner inventory... I’d bet there are several great old benchrest rifles in triple deuce at great prices ready to go.

Im with Msalm. Find a used BR action, rebarrel if you have to. Coned bolt all the way. And this is from a died in the wool 40x guy....
after that, pick any good barrel...Hart, Broughton, Lilja, shilen and have a good smith chamber it and put it on. Tell him you want to shoot traditional bullets and let him chose the twist. Id go 14, but that is just an opinion

With todays bullets a 12 twist does wonders with the 52g and 55g boat tails. Remember you're stabilizing length not weight. And I have a 13 twist on one of my rifles that doesn't seem to matter. Most of todays winning competitors in short and long range benchrest are using boat tail bullets. Just a hint! you'll have alot of fun with the 12 twist! I started with the 222 in 1972 but it's not going to beat a 6PPC at any yardage with any regularity. Don't get me wrong I still shoot it just to be obstinate, LOL!! I just built another 222 on a slim little Sako vixen action with a heavy stainless Krieger, 9 twist, .020" freebore, for shooting 69g match bullets!! if you can find a 40X action, barrel it without touching the action. You'll be surprised.
