Which Barrel for a .222 Remington?

I'd do a custom. Today's brass isn't what it used to be. Neck turning is necessary to get the best out of your brass.
Yes, a custom reamer. Probably a .250" diameter neck. That way I can use .012" thick brass. I will turn the necks. Lapua will ususlly clean up at .012" thick where Nosler will be closer to .011" thick. Thinking zero freebore and a 1.75 degree lead angle.

I’ve a Remington Varmint Special that was rebarreled with a Douglas chromoly barrel. Same contour and twist as the original. It shoots great. If I were to do it again, the only thing I would change is to use a faster twist barrel.

Maybe someone will remember this, wasn’t there an old thread about Remington putting slow twist rimfire type barrels on 222’s at one point.

1-14 twist 222 shot many wonderful groups over the years when it was benchrests little baby. It supplanted the 219 Donaldson wasp and then later it lost out to the 6PPC.
I would say pick your barrel maker and stick with a 1-14 and go with the shorter bullets.

I bought my 788 222 new in 1986.I have approximately 15,000 rounds down the barrel and it shoots fine. Yes the throat is a little fire cracked but it Still shoots under 3/4 minutes of angle not like the 1/2 minute when it was new but come on it's a 788.....

I am gathering things for a .222 Rem build. I have a Brux 1 in 12 twist SS blank and a Dave Manson reamer with a .250" neck, zero free bore and a 1-1/2 degree lead angle. The Brux blank is a 28" Remington Varmint contour. Thinking about a 22" or 24" finish length. I have a trued Remington 700 action. Just waiting on a .22 caliber "Gritters" rod and some bushings.

Got a 788 in 222. 335 and 50 gr. super explosive hornady bullets hover around a 1/2 inch. It's been well used and still accounts for some coyotes every year.

Same bullet I use for hunting.its an amazing bullet!!
It shot nearly as well as a 50g flat base match bullet GTB used to make.when the gun was new I shot many (not regularly mind you) groups in the "2"s if you can belive that!

I'm waiting on a Shilen 12 twist, I have 200 rnds of Lapua brass and another 100 rnds of Rem on the way. That should keep me occupied for a while. I hope my experience is as good as the others. I've had Remingtons in 22-250 and 223 which shot very well for me, not match guns but minute of gopher. The gun is a 40X, so it should shoot, probably well beyond my ability. I appreciate all the information, I didn't need to ask for, it just came along at the 'right time'. I think I have enough components to make this a real shooter. Thanks for the help and sharing of .your experience.

What reamer are you planning to use?

I would be more concerned with who was putting the barrel on vs who made the barrel. As long as it is a reputable manufacture. I got Krieger's, Benchmark's, Brux, and Shilen's. They have all been shooters.

Look through all the blanks at the factory of brand name you choose and pick the one that has the tag that says hummer on it. Its a crap shoot just like it has always been.
