Subsonic 308 without trail boss

Looks like Trail Boss is history, but then I also heard tb is not very accurate in subsonic 308 anyway. I found a load of 150's with Titegroup, but it's so compact I doubt it will ignite reliably. So that leaves bulky flake powders like Clays and Blue Dot. Does anyone have advice for 168 Eldms? (R700, 24 inch 5R barrel, no can)

Didn't run the load through our chrono however;

This particular rig has sorta been our "shop rig" for guys who've never been around tackdriver cast rigs. I stole the factory HS stock off it to use on a more purpose built cast 260. So,put a walnut stock on,a very nice roughed in $135 blank off evilbay. Hadn't quite finished it when the guy was wondering why you never hear much about 4895 with cast 150's. So it took a week to finally get some finish sprayed.... that type of work.

Normally,this rig see's either 4759 or 4198 and the velocity has always been just under 2000fps. It'll shoot 10 shot groups in the high .3's @100 if you hold your mouth right. And that's no sighters or foulers BTW.... they all count. Very deep subject and would have to fire up the Stihl for attacking the weeds,it's so far off the path.

So,with reservation... will say 1900-2000 fps.

It's easily tailorable from 1600 to 2000 FPS. Got the hint from a guy on the CMP forums. It's soft shooting and pretty accurate in my use. He used it to beat up on guys in the service rifle matches.

You could probably go the route that 45-70 guys sometimes do for light pop-gun loads and run a very small charge of Unique. I think they run in the range of 10-15 grains in that huge case, mind you that is usually done with cast bullets.

Not a .308, but I've used a suppressed .300 Whisper (Blackout) since it was invented by my good friend ,JD Jones. I only use WW296 for suppressed loads. Killed 120 deer (out to 270 yards), 4 turkeys, 200+ groundhogs, 1 coyote (170 yds.). I also use suppressed loads in my .223 Contender. I've used only Unique in this caliber. Never had ignition problems or accuracy problems with either of these set ups

yes sir, 8gr of bullseye under 350gr cast lead w/pistol primers is a nice 45-70 load. Run it in competition almost every week.

a guy on another forum asked a similar question to the OP here. Tried to share some knowledge from the cast bullet world. He got butt hurt and I gave up on him

Thanks everyone. Unique makes a lot of sense. I am going to try Blue dot first. Quickload says 8.0 gr with a 168 Eldm should be right at 1050 with a 24 inch barrel. I just worry about pistol powders laying in the bottom of the shell and not lighting reliably. Would a magnum primer help?

Unique powder is not position sensitive. It’s all I use in a 450 with varying degrees of case fill. Even as low as 35-40%. I use standard primers. Magnum primers tend to yield a lower velocity vs a standard. My only conclusion is that they must burn up the powder upon ignition leaving less to build up pressure. With that being said then you need to add powder to get back up to the 1050 fps meaning more powder and more noise. The less powder, the less muzzle pressure which is what we want for the quieter end result.

Buddy of mine tried blue dot in 223 subsonic and said it was position sensitive and he needed to point the barrel up before shooting. I have no experience with it though.
