Wondering how thick the material would need to be to actually stop a 6mm - 30 cal. bullet @ 100 yds ? Would be placing this behind my paper targets. Called a couple of places but they must be out cutting steel cause nobody answers the phone. Does anybody have a lead or contact for these ? Thanks in advance for replies.

Depends on the grade of steel. 3/8" to 1/2" if it's AR500.

A36? A LOT thicker..

I think what you will find is that "hardness" will be more important than "thickness."

Having said that, I am no expert but am sure you will get some replies.

Sounds like you're making a bullet trap. Not sure if you know this, but angling the steel at 45* will increase its effective thickness as well as helping to deflect the shot.

Don't use hot roll steel. Find AR500 3/8-1/2". That'll work for most rifles. All steel distributors around me carry it. Pricy but available. Mostly depends on size.

To add to that post: If you're NOT making an aggressively angled bullet trap, I would not be shooting rifle rounds at a perpendicular/ squared steel target that close.

I got some AR 550, 30-06 only puts a dimple in it at 100 yards. Am thinking I got it from Field and Cave. Can't really be sure.

AR 500 should be OK at 100 yards. Also the speed will make a difference. As mentioned earlier hang them in an angle.
I use 1/2" and 5/8" rubber straps.
