Starting to load 9mm.

Put, a 9' x 9' Tarp on the Ground with, the edges rolled,.. inward or, propped, up with sticks, to catch, the Cases !
Works great, after, adjusting the Tarp a bit,.. after, the first couple of, Shots !
Just some "chit' you Learn, when you get,.. Older !
i have tried the tarp method in the past but i didnt raise the edges like you describe so it didnt catch alot of my brass. I guess im getting really lazy anymore as i just want to walk out there and start shooting. mabie ill get the tarp out one of these days for 1911 but i do have a
45 acp revolver to take care of the 45 acp ammo i have. thanks

Yup! Bending over is getting harder! When the day comes that I think it’s too hard to pick up nickels lying on the ground.....throw some dirt on me cause I’ll be dead!
Simply put down a sheet or tarp and pick them all up at once.... Makes life easy.... Just bought a new tarp because my gen 5 Glock chunks brass.... Seriously a sheet with four rocks to hold it down is great because unlike a tarp the brass doesn't bounce....

I do that with a tarp or a net and with my 6MM ARC I got a brass catcher, at $1 a piece I buy the catcher.

I use American Select for 124 grain 9MM I get 1250 FPS from my Glock 19. Longshot for the 125 grain 357 Sig in my Glock 31 I get 1475 FPS.
Maybe it's just me , but I like to crono some factory to see what speed they are... Of course to each their own but 1250 in 124 gr seems pretty fast...

The factory ammo is why I hand load. 1250 is +p+ depending on who makes the ammo. Standard is 35,000 PSI, +p is 38,500 PSI and NATO is 42,000 PSI. The Glocks passed the NATO process but were too expensive. Unfortunately many 9mm+p factory loads barely are standard pressure. Velocities of 11,XX FPS with 115 grain. I've seen Hornady critical defense 124 barely over 11,20 FPS and other brands at 1200+ in the same firearm. I will say the Hornady had very good expansion and controlled penetration for home defense.

The 357 Sig is worse, USA sets 40,000 PSIas max, European standard is 44,200 PSI. American 125 grain factory ammo barely makes 1,250 FPS and European is very near 1,500 FPS. The Sig was designed to be equal to a 357 Magnum 125 grain from a 4" barrel and the European standard does that.

We ran across that same thing in 10mm , some if not most factory practice rounds were basically .40cal territory.... A shame if you want 10mm power.... Then you run into some of the hot brands that are pushing the 10 to what is meant for and people are shocked by the difference.... I cut my teeth on the ten when it first came out and Norma was loading for it... Unfortunately some people thought the recoil was to much and it kinda died.... I always loved the ten and just gave up when that happened.... I am just waiting for things to chill out a little and I will be picking up another Glock this time in 10mm... My buddy has been really into it since all this mess happened because he could get 10mm half the price of 9mm in Washington St... I just have been really lucky nobody really has one in stock and it's saved me $600... Sooner or later my luck will run out and my wife will be saying , did you buy another Glock...lol

It's a PITA, when you buy 9mm +P it should be just that, 10MM should not be 40 S&W+ a bit as should the Sig 357.

My son got me into the 357 Sig, what I found was a significant increase in energy on target but not a significant increase in felt recoil or torque.

I also load 45 Super for my P14-45 a 230 grain XTP at 1100 FPS. The Para supports the case head and the load increases the energy on target but the 45 super pushes up the felt recoil and torque. It requires practice and big hands to manage the double stack aluminum frame.

OK, so I loaded up some test rounds. Worked up to 4.2 grains of W231 and it worked great with the 124 plated Xtreme HP and below max, which I like.
Now I have a question: I thought and kinda remember 231 was a ball powder. I haven’t used it in a while and maybe I’m remembering wrong? This 231 looks like flake powder. More like Unique. Maybe a flattened ball?0F9245A5-EA39-422C-BAF1-9623B67B22CF.jpeg

I've loaded a ton of 9mm because I like to reload and I have thousands of pieces of range brass, 6 pounds or more of powder and lots of bullets. I also have lots of primers (recently, I came into 5000 more from a friend who was given them from someone's estate).

I love the X-Treme and Berry's plated 124 grain bullets for practice, and for carry I use 124 Hornady XTP bullets. I finish the loads with a Lee factory crimp die.

I use Unique almost exclusively (5.0 to 5.6 grains).

These loads work flawlessly in an M&P Shield and 3 different Sigs: A P-239, a P-6 and an M11-A1.

I forgot to mention, if you use range brass or any other not new brass, I would inspect every single one. I've found split 9mm cases and I know I've shot at least 1 because it went 6 inches lower than the rest and recoil was milder.

Inspect the cases after tumbling. It's easier to see.
In roughly 7 thousand range pickup cases I've found several split ones and a handful of other questionable ones.

Here is a pic of some of the offenders....

I’ve reloaded it before, but I still question the economics. I just bought 1k blazer 9mm for $.28 per round. If I figure .10 for primer price and .15 for bullet plus a little powder, it’s tough to justify reloading vs factory.
