Squirrel nirvana

Acorns were almost nonexistent this year and the squirrels have been ganging up in my back yard. Usually don't see this many until the dead of winter and they've dug up what in the fall they buried. There were a few more outside of this pic. If I throw corn out the night before, it's like this every morning. Unfortunately, they're way inside the safety zone.

What’s a safety zone?
Different for other states but here in Delaware, 100 yards from an occupied building for guns, 50 for archery.

(a)(1) No person, except the owner or occupant, shall discharge a firearm within 100 yards of an occupied dwelling, house or residence or any barn, stable or any other building used in connection therewith, while hunting or trapping for wild birds or wild animals of any kind.  The area within said distance shall be a “safety zone,” and it shall be unlawful to shoot at any wild bird or wild animal while it is within such safety zone without the specific advance permission of the owner or tenant.

(2) Notwithstanding any other law or regulation to the contrary, the safety zone for hunting deer by archery device during established archery seasons shall be 50 yards.
(b) During any open hunting or trapping season, it shall be unlawful for any person, other than the owner or occupant, to hunt or to trap, pursue, disturb or otherwise chase any wild animal or bird within a safety zone without the specific, advance permission of the owner or occupant.
(c) No person, except the owner or occupant, or a person with the permission of said owner or occupant, shall discharge a firearm so that a shot, slug or bullet lands upon any occupied dwelling, house, or residence, or any barn, stable or other building used in connection therewith.

How about a nice Air Rifle, or a .22 short with a suppressor. Even a .22 LR will have little chance of being heard and it looks like you have plenty of safety spots behind those critters.

Yet the question still stands.....in the light of supressors and subsonic rounds......What is a safety zone???;)

NFA items are against the law here in the People's Socialist Democratic State of Delaware. So are the trick units like bump stocks and anything that can mechanically simulate full auto. Same goes for discharging a firearm in a subdivision. Air guns are the only option and then they have to be .177.

Ah, now I understand. I don’t think that’s an issue for me. My closest neighbors are in the background.

Watch out, all the newer vehicles have insulation on the wiring that squirrels love. My Brother in Law found out the hard way on a new Ford Dually Diesel. I forget how much that wiring harness cost but it was way up in the thousands.
My sister got to feeding them, if he sees one from the house the anschutz comes out.

They tried destroying one of my deer stands. That was war, game on. 25-06 to 400 yards. 223 closer. Shotgun really close. Walnuts with holes drilled on 160 Conny triggers. I have zero love for those destructive rascals.

I had a generation 20 years ago that were chewers - the posts of my deck and the PVC vent pipes sticking out of my roof. When they were eliminated, the follow on descendants have behaved since then. Good for them haha.

That insulation is a soy based compound. I've seen several harnesses replaced due to that. Now what kind of genius comes up with a food based insulation... It's war on them at my place too. They eat my house and everything around it. Garage door seals... Plenty of food outside of my yard to eat. The mowed portion of the yard is my "safety zone". Enter at your own risk.

My neighbor in Texas had rodents chew her F350's wiring.. The price was so high she just traded it in for a new one..

Yup. I took my new SUV in for service before I drove east. We keep it parked under the portico. The mechanic showed me the squirrel poo on top of the engine. They had just started on the hoses. He told me to hang a bar of Irish Spring in the engine compartment to keep them away. When I get back, I’m declaring war on the squirrels. I’m taking my Anschutz back with me!

They like rubber fuel lines and hydraulic hoses also. $$$ add up quickly!

Moth balls work great. I use to put them in my Motorhomes in the heater and refrigerator vent to keep them out. The seem to have an interest in anything that uses propane. Strangely they never bothered the engine or generator compartments.
