Springfield 2020 RimFire

I just bought one of the 2020s and took it to the range and shot a few cards with it. Was not as good as any of my Unlimited rifles and even my cheap ass Anschutz 5430 shot better than the 2020! Then I found the bore was not up to the standards of my Mueller, Shilen Ratchet or Benchmark rifles either. After examination with my scanning electronic microscope there were easily detected burrs in the machine work too! On the highest resolution the burrs looked really big.. and ugly too!. Effing unbelievable! What kind of operation are they running over at Springfield? I am so pissed I think I will ask for my money back. I am so terribly disappointed! I real really really expected more for my $2.98 rifle.

if you want a a $2.98 rifle that will shoot, get a CZ Scout, Savage MkII or a Bergarra BMR, they won't be up to Anshutz standards but they won't be shotguns in rimfire clothing either

Got my target model back from the smith yesterday after setting the barrel back with a 52D reamer & recrowning it, Nasty weather here, 38 degrees and snowing with variable winds, Got it sighted in and grabbed a box of Center X and shot this 5 shot group at 33 yards, That's where my bullet trap is at, For reference, the target measures .600 diameter, Looks like it helped a bunch but will try further in a little better weather, The flier was probably me...20240110_151459.jpg

4 fell in a cluster but that flyer turned it into 2MOA , a typical Springfield 20 20 factory group. Throwing a flyer out that far when the target is that close is not a good omen.

A 5 x 5 at 50 target will tell the tale

I'm so back and forth on this rifle. I'm still not sold that it's as good as a shooter that some say it is.
I do look at it this way also, the cost of a new 10/22 Ruger is over $300 most places you look. They are good shooters for the most part. However you can put a lot of $$$ in one to make it pristine. What I see with the 2020 is multiple extras to start with for a little more money.

I handled one of the Springfield rifles with AA wood at the LGS last week. A very nice rifle.
Kudos to Springfield for making a quality rimfire, albeit in Turkey, for sale at a decent price here in the USA. Like any mass produced item, quality (accuracy) will range across the spectrum with improvements implemented as time goes on. Like anything, spend your money, take your chances.

The Springfield 2020 Rimfire is made in Turkey by Retay and is imported by Springfield. Too bad that it isn't made in the USA.

Darn! I just read the American Rifleman article. Oh well, sold by an American company anyway....

I bought the 2020 second hand 3 weeks ago. It wouldn't shoot a lick. I tested alot of ammo and could get a rare .5 in group most were 2moa or larger. I bedded the rifle no change. I lapped the barrel, no change, I recowned 122 degree with little change. Last night I cut the threaded portion off the barrel and recrowned it at 11 degree target and put a mirror finish on it. Took to range today and it shot well. It shot cci sv at .3 in. It shot eley club the same. Even the bad ammo shot closer to moa . So from other users and my experience their process of finishing barrel causes a swell or bulge in thr threaded section. So anybody with 2020 that won't shoot. Cut the threads off or counter bore that section and send us the results. I will take some pics next time I test ammo. I haven't tried any of thr higher tier match ammo.

This is what I understood , they buggered the muzzle up on 50% of them , some people are seeing improvement with action torque
I need to play with mine and see what it will do or what it needs

Such a variety of opinions posted, and they're all over the place. The guy that I think is the most credible is from Plinkster. We all know him. We all know that he can shoot. And I personally have picked up so so many helpful shooting tips by watching his videos that I watch him regularly.
I don't and won't spend $1000/s of dollars on a new toy. That's just me~! I also am not into the 'flavor of the week'. so I don't race out and buy the latest and claimed to be the 'greatest ever'. There are just so many proven items out there. Sadly I've come to an age where I can't go out hunting any longer and don't need a rifle that I can take out and beat the crap out of it putting the plastic stocked rifle off my interest list. I love wood and blued steel. Plinkster says the Springfield can cost $1000 with high grade wood, but as I've already said $1000 Springfield takes it off the list.
Do yourself a favor and watch Plinkster's video. It may help you keep a few dollars in your pocket~!

After reading Greeves3649 above post I tried pushing a bullet into the muzzle, it went in about 3/8th inch without much pressure then stopped. So they have obviously screwed up the muzzle. I cut the threaded portion off and recrowned it again. I will try to test later today.
