Spinning My Wheels with a Rem MLR 338 Lapua

I am worried about the 96.0 group. That group didn't just open up, it exploded! Almost 4 inches?!? That makes me think that the 94.0 and the 98.0 groups might be an illusion of sorts. I am wondering wether to keep testing, spending $$, or is it necessary for a new barrel. I am not competing. I would like to get MOA @ 1000 yards tho. Thank You!

Less than 500.
Do you have access to a bore-scope? Might want to take a look before you invest in another barrel. On the other hand I once ruined a .257 Weatherby barrel in less than 500 rounds. Never shot more than a 5 shot string with it but they WERE hot.
Your velocities seem low to me also. What chronograph? dedogs

I have my doubts about factory remington barrels now days...

My brother in law had a remington 338 lapua and it shot ok... not as good as the savage he has now. H1000 was his loads in both.

4 inches at 200 yards is obserd though... thats horrible.

Have you checked bolts, bedding, free floating, given it all a look over?

In the end, a good barrel will do nothing but be better over a factory barrel..

Are you using bags, or bipod?

The action has been bedded, factory trigger adjusted pretty good for a rem trigger. Barrel is free floated. Started with bipod, went to front rest after the first disturbing groups started to show up. I am looking for just MOA.
I had the same experience with a Savage LRH in 338 mag.
I am using a shooting chrony @ 10'.
I do have a buddy with a borescope. I will check it out.

10 feet may be too close. A lot of muzzle blast from it. Maybe the chrono is off. I feel for the loads listed the velocity should be more. Maybe it just is a bad barrel. Matt

I had my kimber 243 win rebarreled with a 1-12 for the 55 grainers for 4000-ish like i was getting with the factory barrel, minus the flyers. Now the 55 grain loads go about 350fps slower and don't group. It does however shoot 70's and the 88's very good.

I finally loaded up an old load that performed well in the past, and it performed well again. 300SMK with retumbo was a winner once again. I don't know why the retumbo & 250 nobler A.B. did not perform as before tho.
The 300 bergers are also responding with different seating depths. I am under One MOA with both loads at 200 yards, so I think Im good to go. Will be testing at 600 yards later in the week. Thanks for all of the help and suggestions. That 4 inch group at 200 yards almost sent me to the therapist's couch! :)

So, what was your charge weight with Retumbo?

93.0 of Retumbo.
Same OCW load mine loves. Shooting an Obermeyer .338 5R 30" SS 9.4" twist 1.350" breech dia. AMU 338 Lapua Mag barrel on Defiant Deviant XL Lapua action. Consistantly shooting 10 round groups between 3.72" and 5.44" and 868 yards (max range I have available right now). Wind is my largest variant in group size.

Oh yes, I'm located in north FL so temp doesn't vary much, @ 44°F winter to 97°F summer, during shooting sessions. Velocity running between 2,686 fps (colder temps) and 2,738 fps (hot days). SD usually single digit and ED hasn't been over 26 fps yet. I'm not shooting competition so, I always let my barrel cool at least a full minute between shots and 15 minutes between strings, MINIMUM.
