Spindle Speed

I installed a Hitachi WJ200 VFD along with a Baldor EFM3558T 3 phase 2 horse motor on my Jet GHB-1340A lathe a couple of years ago. a bit pricey and a somewhat involved project but what a difference. Instant braking at lower speeds, instant speed changes without having to stop the lathe to switch gears. The tach shows 5.3 RPM which is sloooooooooooooooooooooow. A twist of the rheostat will increase the speed up to 80 RPM in an instant. Moved all of the electrical connections from the ill thought out location on the back of the gearbox to the gray box to the left of the VFD. I'm in the process of tooling up to chamber barrels. Pray for me!

I have that same VFD on a PM 1340GT. I have been able to turn mine down to 4 or 5 rpm as well. More importantly, the control board Mark Jacobs built me has a jog feature that always gives 20 rpm, which is perfect for repositioning the spindle when in a low gear.

I think my will also overdrive to 150% of the given rpm for a gear.

Pat have you built your thread stop yet?

That series looks like a weeks worth of YouTube videos! I'll be up til all hours watching them though.
And WAY above my pay grade when he was gettin deep with the techie electronic descriptions of the system , but none the less i got the general jist of what he's accomplishing

I've got a Hitachi WJ200 VFD and Clough42 ELS on my Precision Matthews PM-1340GT. I used a hybrid Servo that has double the torque that James used. No stalling or faulting with heavy cuts. The ELS can be fitted to just about any lathe. The Servo is turning the gear drive feed to the gearbox. Some even put the servo on the opposite end of the lathe and drive the leadscrew directly. I leave my gearbox in a 6:1 reduction and gears on input side are 1:1. Being able to have electronic braking (VFD), change speed (VFD) and feed (ELS) on the fly is nice as well as having every imperial/metric thread available with a button press (ELS). Metric threads you still have to leave the half-nut closed or at least pick it back up in same position every time. I have a joystick bi-directional jog and it sets the frequency to 6HZ on the VFD and depending on gear position is maybe around 11 RPM, I'd have to look but it will go slower if you change gear position 1,2,3, all I ever change on gearbox is H/L. Perfect for tapping or watching an indicator needle.

Learn to thread upside down and away from a shoulder. 190 rpm and .001 cuts make for some fine looking threads, even on a geared head lathe

Not sure that was original posters question but I always thread away, but take a heavier cut than .001" until last couple of passes. I plunge straight in with cross slide too, no compound.

With all of the VFD and electronic lead screw ad-ons that get talked about, I'm surprised no one has https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_diy/turn_key_cnc.html . We've got a 10x54 in the shop with a Centroid conversion on it that does real well. Not a CNC from the manufacturer of the mill, but a professionally installed conversion (Rt,66, now owned by Servo). "Conversational Programing", you don't need to know "G" code. Although, it will except "G" code manually entered, or a program generated that uses "G" code and load it into the Centroid with a 'flash drive'. Been trying to find time to set that 10x54 up and flute a barrel or 2 soon.
