Speaking of Remington....

My Remington 700 7mm Ultra mag will only accept two rounds in the magazine.. Insertion of a third round and the bolt cannot be closed on an empty chamber.. The bolt slides part way closed over the brass almost to the shoulder, but the shell will not go down far enough to allow the bolt to close all the way. Remington spec for this rifle claims 3 in the mag.. Reloads, using 140 Nosler partitions. The rounds are to book COL and will fit in the mag individually, or if only two are used. I checked the bottom of the follower and it is almost flat. I tried closing the bolt and inserting rounds from the bottom, but the floor plate won't close.. Any ideas??

Does it have the clearanced magazine box or a solid walled magazine box?

Ive always thought magnums were capacity 3 total. Std ctg is 3 in the box.

I got one of the first .300 RUM's ( in 1999 out of the Custom Shop) issued and the ship box specifically states 2 round mag capacity. As a matter of fact I even had my smith rework the mag well due to feeding issues, and after considerable time was spent it will still only hold 2 rounds.
Consider that the RUM case is 0.020" fatter than a belted mag at the belt ......and I don't believe Remington changed stock and mag well designs just to accommodate the Ultra mag product line.

Does it look like this one or are the walls solid. Sometimes they put solid walled box in by mistake when it needs this one.

Ok so it sounds like it may just hold two.. It does have the correct spring, I'll live with it.. Thanks for the confirmation.. All the Rem info on the ultra mags states 3 round capacity.. My guess is that Remington or someone there just didn't change the info. Thanx again..

Minesweeper, I just looked and mine doesn't have the holes in it. It is solid.. For $10 I'll try it..

FWIW most of my hunting guns are Rem. 7's or 700's, and after using them since 1968, I have found that keeping magazine capacity one cartridge less than advertised capacity permits greater chance of positive feeding. Regardless of which rifle I am using anymore, 2 in the magazine is more than sufficient for my type of hunting.

The cut outs in the magazine boxes allow the shoulders to spread out a bit more which allows that area of the cartridge to spread out just enough for the bolt to ride over them.

That was a bust. Bought the mag box from Midway, installed it and still no go.. Guess I'll have to do some more investingatin..

Ive never seen a remington magazine that fits in a stock hold 3- esp an ultra mag.

My factory 338 Ultra only holds 2 in the magazine, one more than is really needed for my style of shooting....

Update: I finally did get three in there. I tried using empty cases and they fit. I figured out that if I want three in the mag, I have to make sure they are all slid back as far as possible and carefully close the bolt..

Two is probly sufficient but I like to maximize my chances.. Which means I can now miss three times instead of two.

I think I would work on hitting the animal on the first shot. Don't understand needing more than 3.

Ive never seen a situation where a deer will let you get off 3. Especially after you recover from an ultramag pounding. I guess if a deer survives me missing twice ill let him walk off anyway really.

I can only remember a very small number of times that I needed a second shot on deer (and then only as a finishing shot), let alone a fourth.

Can't imagine what the fourth shot at a running deer would look like accuracy-wise!

FWIW, I shoot a M700 BDL in 264 Win Mag occasionally, and it has always been a two-in-the-mag rifle.

I've never needed that third round, so it's pretty much a non-issue to me.
