Sorry, another chronograph question

Once I set the chrony up this way, I put a laser bore sighter into the bore and now I don't look at it but put my hand right in the middle of the chrony screen. I will adjust the chrony so that the red dot on my hand will go through the middle of the screen and at the right height. I do this for both the two screens front and back.

Just make sure that you remove the laser bore sighter from the bore if it's the kind that is inserted in the muzzle (the cheap ones). Ask my how I know this is important :'( :'(

A better, and far safer laser bore sighter is the chamber mounted version that has to be removed before you can chamber a round. If one insists on using the muzzle mounted kind then figure out how to attach a piece of cleaning rod to it that will stick out the breech end of of the barrel. That is unless you want a nice bulge in the barrel about 2-1/2 to 3" back from the crown.

When you get tired of lugging all that stuff around, and shooting the overhead legs and all try the Superchrono from Steinert Sensing. http://www.steinertsensing.com/en-GB/acoustical-shooting-chronograph-c-143-1.aspx One small tripod 5 feet in front of the muzzle. The only drawback is that your round MUST be supersonic as it works off of sound and not flickering shadows.

amlevin - it's a good point. You may have seen my post on this but what I do is to do what is in these photos. I carry the laser with it's blister pack attached to a white piece of cardboard with a piece of wood on it. When I mount the laser to the rifle, the laser is pushed through the wood piece. If I forget to take the laser off and look through the scope, I will see nothing as the cardboard blocks it.

All this assumes you follow SOP and trust me I do for all the reasons you mentioned.

In terms of a replacement... It will have to be something I can setup at the bench without having to put something in front of my gun. That will be a LabRadar whenever it becomes available. I am a patient person.
