Magnetic chronograph is awesome!

Why is that? (just curious as you have actually used it...not arguing...maybe I misunderstand their FAQ). I'm not so keen if I can't use it on my club days.
The custom page shows it clamped to a bench and not attached to the barrel. The below came from their FAQ

Aha, the one page on the site I didn't see. The above shows one secured with a pipe/block/c-clamp rig. One would need a bench that extends well past the muzzle. That could work but could also have issues with alignment and proximity.

Try one and let us know!

Fella's,
I can see how this would be a useful tool in building a drop chart or something but I use my chronographs in all load development, I mostly shoot 1K bench rest and can't help think that it wouldn't act as a tuner so to speak and after it was all said and done without it attached you may not be in perfect tune anymore, just a thought??

Bozo: I'm not a 1K yard shooter, and no expert by any means.....

I do my load development work at 100yds....and when done with that, take off the unit and see what adjustment is necessary without it, and adjust the vertical turret as needed.

With the 6BR I haven't found it to be that significant.

In a 600 yard match, as in the one our range had this morning, I adjust per the MOA from 100 out to 600, and used the gong to confirm my POI.

Works for me....YMMV.

I am pretty keen - (but I don't want anything on my barrel) if they think it will work ok with an attachment from the heavy F-open stands. I can't do much at the moment as they are working through the export laws.

I would love to chrony every load I shoot, even my matches - I think the data built up over time and temp changes, bullet sorting etc etc would be invaluable to tune.

Other than the barrel mount, this device looks like a step forward. Cut a V shaped yoke out of plywood (with enough room in the cutout of the V for the rifle rest to sit) that is placed on the bench, point forward. Sandbags or weight of any kind would hold down the rear, and the bayonet device would sit forward, cantilevered on the point of the V atop a full on miniature windage type rest for easy and full vert and windage adjustments. All adjustments of the bayonet could be made from the bench.

Here is a link to a review of the magnetospeed chrono. validated with a CHRONY device

Another concern with this device is the short distance between the sensors. The Chrony and Oehler have about 2ft and this device has only a few inches. Maybe the real advance is the sensor which can be mounted on a longer base but would no longer be attached to the barrel. This technology would remove the need of screen.

On second thought this may not be possible as the sensors must be 1" or less below the path of the bullet unless the magnetic field can be strengthened by larger magnets.

Anyone else tried this chronograph and compared it to the standard style? I've been reading a lot of positive feedback on other sites. It would sure be easier to set up than a normal chrony, especially at a public range.
Also, has anyone tried to adapt a bench mount tripod so it's not actually strapped to your barrel?

It has been postulated that accuracy is velocity specific, for a given barrel, bullet, powder and seating depth. If a match director would let you shoot at a sighting in target with a barrel mounted chronograph, without making an issue of the additional weight (as long as it was removed for actual record target shooting) then for those situations where shooters have the time to load or adjust loads, before or between matches, and going in front of the firing line is not allowed, this type of unit might have some real utility. ( I think that this may have set a new length of run-on sentence record.) Also, when public ranges are busy to the point where getting a cease fire is a problem, you could measure velocity without having to shut down the firing line. You could work up an accurate load, and then measure its velocity, so that you could use software to determine scope settings for longer ranges. Used this way, the effect of the additional weight would not matter. You would only be measuring velocity.

It would also seem that another major advantage is the fact that it gives you consistent readings in any light situation. This, as opposed to standard versions where certain light conditions are less than ideal.
Tmason- please post some results when you test yours. Thanks
