Someone's Gonna Pay.......

Second time out my target was not any better . I'm going out to find some different amo today , like you hopping to find some amo that gives better groups . How big are your circles?

He said the circles were .75 inch. A piece of advise to both of you, try cci standard velocity. Wal mart has it in 50 rd blue boxes in my area. It eventually grouped around an inch for me.
When I started down the accuracy rabbit hole I tested 3 bricks of everything and kept records that I still have.

I've tried at least 20 different brands & lot numbers of various ammo, including 3 or 4 of CCI stuff. The above target I was shooting the somewhat "best" of the bunch.

I have probably north of 1000 rounds down the barrel now, & it seems the big flyers are less at this stage. To call this a "Target" rifle is down right deceiving....

So just for the halibut, I shot four 10 shot groups at 100 yards. No real concentration, just put the reticle mostly in the middle & rip off ten. Wind was a little switchy, & more than I wanted, but groups were better than expected.

Two groups on the left were with the Federal.
Top one measures 2 7/8"
Bottom one is 4 7/8"
9 went into a flat 3"

Two groups on the right were with CCI Tactical AR ammo.
Top one measures 3 1/4"
Bottom one is 3 1/2"
9 went into 2 1/4"

The white section in the middle measures 2.50"

Out to out on the red is 4.00"

Check out the thread on "aluminum tape bedding" on the RFC site. It's mainly for 10/22s, but you never know whether it can help. Worked great on my old 1960s 10/22 and shrank the groups by half!

More advise. Get together with a more experienced shooter that can actually see you shoot and ask suggestions. Practice a lot and then some more practice. Shooting completion and talking with competitors is sometimes helpful. Bulk ammo is the lowest quality ammo produced. It may help you to shoot 5 rd groups instead or 10 rd groups. By 10 rounds one is getting into shooter fatigue problems. My first year with my rifle I shot over 10,000 rds. Now, 5 years later, I am still working for a .5 ave. However, I don't shoot any 2 inch groups anymore. The progress was slow but consistent year after year. Neither the gun or the ammo will shoot itself the shooter has to do it. Above all practice. A smaller aiming point will also help you. I use a 3/4 inch black paster on a white background.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure the shooter isn't to blame here.

Springfield's accuracy guarantee:
Springfield Armory stands behind all Model 2020 Rimfire rifles and promises rock solid performance with a three-shot accuracy guarantee. Every configuration is guaranteed to shoot 1” or less at 50 yards with quality match-grade factory ammunition, in the hands of a skilled shooter.

This one is lucky to shoot a 2 shot group into their accuracy standard. The majority of my 10 shot groups were shot 5 at a time. Load and shoot 5, then load & shoot another five at the same bull.

I'm shooting off my Hart rest with a cordura bag, rear bag is a Protektor Doctor bag filled with heavy sand. I'v tried hard holds, soft holds, no holds, played with action torque, played with barrel pressure at the tip, even loaded some single, one at a time by hand.

I've hard cleaned it with a brush & solvent, I've stroked it with JB, and I've look at the bore with my Hawkeye. Bottom land has a couple divots, but I don't think that plays a role.

I've had a couple 40-X's and a Vudoo in the past, currently shoot a BMR Carbon and a 10/22 with a Kidd barrel & trigger for play & hunting.

My Vudoo would do this:

Wow , alf "" I'm pretty sure the shooter isn't to blame here"" I think your right . You should not be having that problem .As a experienced shooter.

My last trip to the range with my Ruger American 22RF I did get some groups .837 .816 .501 and then with Remington Bulk over 2" . I'm going to do mods to the gun now Hopping to keep the groups under .500 . LOL LOL

If you can, tell me a little more about aluminum tape bedding. I’ve never heard of it. I have 10-22, CZ 455 and 457, and Kimber 82G. All shoot decent but looking for more.
Thanks

Well, others beat me to it! Basically, you apply several layers aluminum tape to the sides of the receiver until it sits tight inside the stock. The thread also discusses the use of rubber shims along the length of the barrel channel to offset barrel harmonics that affect accuracy. In my 10/22's case, I used a rubber shim just under the barrel where it exits the fore end of the stock. This also helped accuracy. Every rifle is different, and you need to experiment on where to locate the shim. In most cases it is within 2 inches of where the barrel joins the receiver.
