Some interesting info on my .20 Practical

Well I finally received my 20 Practical barrel with the Pac-nut for my Remington 700 action. I decided on 28 inch length. I was influenced by Mr. DogBuster on this decision. What I found interesting was that I am getting 3850fps. with 40gr. v-max with 24 grains of RL10 and with my 26 inch barrel in my 204 ruger using 24.5 grains of RL10 shooting 39gr. Sierra I'm getting 3750fps.
I don't know but seems I should be getting a bit more speed out of the 204 ruger. Seems the extra barrel length in the 20Prac. has paid off. The load I have worked up for the 20 Practical has put 5 rounds at .257 for 100 yards and .577 at 200 yards. I am very pleased with the performance of this 20 Practical so far. Most of the prairie rats are about gone for the year...I can't wait to get a few kills with this rifle. I really like the fact that .223 brass is more easily to be had for sure! :)

In my 20P Ar15 w/22" bbl, 32g NBT, 32g ZM and 34g dogtown, 24g r10x I get 3782 fps.
I don't run the 40g as the 32g just prints such darn small groups to 400 yards & a perfect coyote load so far.
24g h4198 runs those same bullets at 4035 fps, but also goes from .300" w/32g to .965"
I have a 24" 20P bbl coming in for another Savage build.

Well I suppose I ought to try some 32 grainers just to see how they do...but I use the 32 grainers in my 20V/T with great results.
I like to hit the rats with the 40's for the blow-up effect...LOL. :o ;D Not saying the 32's are bad but seems when the heavier
bullets are pushed with some speed the prairie rats fly apart a bit more. ;D I might be wrong but I do think the 32 grain bullets might be a bit less destructive on a coyote hide though. If the 32 grainers end up more accurate then I might consider using for sure...it's all fun man!!! :)

The smaller volume of chamber dimensions is probably where your getting the most increase in speed.
There was a test years ago on the 204r where the tester started with along barrel and kept cutting it to study velocities. If memory serves right around 16" netted the highest velocitys in that particular test. Goes against conventional wisdom. I might try that test myself someday just for ha ha's.

I've never owned a 20 practical but think it's a great cartridge. Big fan of the 204r simply because I've had so many of them. But the practical is probably an improvement over the 204r. Seldom did I ever need the extra room in the 204 and the practical is just more economical. Enjoy that gun.

jo191145...I tend to agree with your statement as far as the increase in speed but I sure like the looks of my 20 Practical cannon...LOL ;D Another nice thing about the 20 Practical is the chamber dimensions. I liked the zero free bore and the .233 neck and did not have to buy a reamer for the barrel. When the day comes to replace my 204 Ruger barrel I would have to buy a custom reamer as the Sammi specs. have way too much free bore in my opinion. ......Or just go ahead and go with another 20 Practical. :
I love the .223 based wildcats as I do believe they are more efficient and brass is easier to obtain. All good man!!! ;D

stick with 40 V's in the PT.....32's in the VT are great.........

but.....I run all 40 V's in my three 20 cal's......

just to keep inventory simple.....20VT..20PT...20-222

glad you like the 28" PT..........good choice.....
