Soft Rifle Cases - For BIG rifles.

Looking to possibly clear out a couple hard rifle cases to replace them with some quality SOFT cases. I have always used hard cases,Starlight, Storm, Doskocil), but want something less cumbersome for some purposes. Easier for travel, transport and storage...for match rifles. Of course, hard cases will still be used when necessary, airline etc.)

They need to house a 1000 Yard rifle,17lb) with a big scope on it.

What are people using, and recommend or NOT recommend) in this realm?

Jim Hardy - pretty sure you were recommending a soft case awhile back and they were reasonably priced and semi-custom?

Thanks,
JB

Jason,

Whatever you get, make sure is has a hard box on the muzzle end. Most of the Kolpins have this feature. If you've ever dropped a cased rifle off a tailgate--you know why it's important. Best softcases I've found are the Kolpin ShotTector and Rhino, but, I think they may be too short for your needs and they cost MORE than a Plano AirGlide. Still you can see it offers better than average protection:

Kolpin website now lists a 50" rhino that might be long enough: http://www.kolpin-outdoors.com/products/rhino_all_purpose.html

Kolpin is good and, as stated, one of the few with muzzleguard. Midway has a number.

Take a look at battlelakeoutdoors.com. Their deluxe predator case is about the best out there.

Cabalas has a heavy quilted duck cloth padded case I like for carrying my shotguns. Not sure if they make one to fit a large rifle like you describe but worth checking out.

Jason,

Just found this. Something new--a soft case by Doskocil. It's the model GG 400. Has nose box and it 48" overall,2" longer than most cases). Retail about $26.00. Might work:

Gamo makes a 49" case that's only $13.00 at Pyramid Air:

There's a company called Bulldog making a "hybrid" canvas case that has a U shaped plastic insert embedded in the case. Most of their stuff is crap but these are good. The website is almost impossible to find. They had a 48" scoped rifle and a 52" shotgun case. They weren't tall enough for my tubegun with irons, but they looked like they would work for a traditional rifle well. May be worth some research.

The Battle Lake case fits a 28" barreled rifle with a Shehane ST1000 stock with room to spare. It would have no problem with a 56mm scope and a longer barrel. It has the best protection possible in a semi soft case. The price has increased a fair amount since I bought mine, but I would do it again.

I got a Buffalo River 52" Camo scoped soft bag. It features the hard barrel end protector and the wide ribbed rubberized bottom. Its perfect for my F-Class rifle with 30" barrel. The Buffalo River website does not show this style bag so it must be relatively new.

I have two of these, on is for a 6.5x284 with 31" barrel plus brake, A-5 stock and a NF 8x32. It is fits easily without the bipod. Dave

MODERATOR: Yep, that looks like a good simple 52" case that would do the job. Ebay Buy Now price is $19.95.

They're about 175 from the usual suspects

When in stock, these are pretty good.

I've heard these are really nice too.

Savior bags

I got one of these for Christmas, after a little hinting to 'Santa' ;) My older Hafner and Creedmoor bags had the ends blown out, or the zipper busted, or both. The Savior bag certainly appears sturdy... but honestly, it's awful big and bulky for *one* gun. Yes, it's well protected. It's also about 2-1/2 times the size of what I'm used to toting around. FWIW.
