So I had a bullet get stuck in the lands

Clean the heck out of that thing with JB/IOSSO and/or a bronze brush and then learn Alex’s stripped bolt method for finding the lands. Life will get so much easier. Some guys can and do get by cleaning their rifles just by running a few patches down the barrel. There are also some catridge/powder combos that build carbon really fast and those require very aggressive cleaning methods.

Keep in mind some bullets even though being same brand same weight same part number can really vary.
I found there was a big difference in variance between lots with several Seirra 168 SMK I had.
Consistency just was not even close in length to ogive.
Heres a picture of two different 168SMK (exact bullets different lot) one each from a different lot box.
That much variance is just not acceptable in my book.
Personally I try to stick with Bergers now.

I just checked my 243 data, and my loaded rds are 2.801 c.o.a.l. to fit my S/A Rem 700 mag box. These rds are loaded with 105 AMAX's and they measure 2.270 to the ogive. According to my data that puts me at 0.015 off the lands in this rifle. I'm going to stick my neck out and say there's no way your 2.996 measurement is correct.

I know every rifle's different, but you have to be jamming the bullet no matter where/how your coming up with that measurement. In my case, if I seated these AMAX's out that far even at a c.o.a.l measurement I'd be jamming 0.180, and only be using approx an 1/8" of the bullets bearing surface. I'm pretty sure I couldn't even close my bolt on that.

Im open to any and all ideas. I am heading to the range now to see how things work out. I normally test both rifles at the same time and shoot similar amounts in each rifle, thereby possibly increasing carbon rings at the same rate. Im using H414 in both rigs. It gives outstanding accuracy, even tho it is temp sensitive.

All powders produce carbon as a by-product of ignition. If not cleaned with regular intervals they will sooner or later give you the carbon ring problem. The ball or flake type powders, of which H-414 is one, are more prone to this than the extruded powders espically if used at moderate pressure. Things that help reduce this is high safe pressure loads, mag primers and good start pressure. Also determining your chamber length and having your case length appx .005 shorter will aleviate this problem. Just make sure that you determine the proper case length so as not to jam the bullet.

yes bullet making dies WEAR.
not big news.
buy in bigger single lots.

different lot # of bullets will do that....

But there is a chance the modified case was not pushed in the chamber all the way, giving you a longer reading. Like in a tighter neck chamber this could happen.

I think we need to know the method to get this measurement before we just say its not right. Calipers with a comparator on them could yield a measurement which wouldnt correlate to anybody elses measurement even if they had the same brand attachment
