So Cal Fires!!!

It’s terrible. I’m still trying to contact a cousin of my wife who lives in Altedena. As of last night, the fire maps showed houses burning a block away from the cousin’s address. I’d sure like to know if they’re OK.
Send me a PM
That's odd, because CA got nearly twice their average rainfall the last two winters. Recall devastating floods and mudslides, big Sierra snowpacks.

Which likely resulted in an abundance of vegetation that has dried out to perfect fuel - one part of the fire triangle. the Santa Ana winds provided another part. It will be interesting to see what or who provided the heat.

My son just reported that power and water are off in parts of Altadena so ongoing fire suppression efforts will require require tanker trucks.

It has been quite a week for thousands of people whose lives have abruptly and violently changed. To read many of the comments here and on other forums is disappointing. Disasters of this proportion blamed on politics and DEI? If only life were so simple. Whatever happened to Christian charity? Not everything is red / blue. A town I called home for thirty some years is largely destroyed and thousands have lost everything. And all of this is laid at the feet of liberals, DEI appointees, and the usual suspects? Having spent some time working fires I can guaran damn tee all y'all that a state full of SWM conservatives would have failed in the face of what happened in Altadena and Pacific Palisades. Can we get back to being Americans and quit being divided and conquered?

For a small glimpse of what went down in Altadena you can watch my son's YouTube video of conditions at our home. It's a bit salty at times so NSFW or kids unless their vocabulary is already "adult"...

May your families and homes be safe.

Many things are shades of grey. We love our children and most have experienced situations where we warned them there would be negative consequences of choices they were making, and many times this unfortunately becomes reality. We don't love them any less and do everything we can to remedy the situation. I think this sums up the feeling of many, that bad decisions were made by governments which exacerbated the situation, and that our country is here to help them. Blame will be assigned, and has started by the locals.

Just what do you think will happen when a state requires use of unreliable power grid. Sells the water use rights to public/private alliance without the constituents approval. And than sacrifices the public good for a minnow or smelt or a bird. AND allows illegal immigration/drugs and homeless to go unchecked. I believe it's called the end of civilization. Keep voting your way, seems like the definition of insanity. Believing a different outcome is possible. Your governor and LA mayor are fine with lying to you, if that helps.

Encourages illegal immigration, grants them immunity from laws, and subsidizes them to boot.

It is very difficult to steer away from politics when a situation like this arise. The evidence of the neglect of the well being for the people is staring the world in the face. The blame has to go where the issue began and humans will make sure that happens. No getting around that.

Questions
Note that just recently Newsome survived a vote for his recall
why should Caliornians vote differently the next time?
Feds will have to backstop all the losses
Everyone in USA with home ins will see a rise in premiums to redistribute the ins company losses

there is now a toxic soup all ove the LA area from chemicals and formadehyde in pressure treated lumber...cacinogens all
AI Overview

Pressure-treated lumber can contain a variety of chemicals, including:

  • Chromated arsenicals (CCA): A strong preservative that contains chromium, copper, and arsenic. CCA was commonly used in outdoor residential settings from the 1970s to the early 2000s. While CCA is not on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) list of known or suspected carcinogens, arsenic is a known human carcinogen.

  • Alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ): A bactericide, fungicide, and insecticide that doesn't contain chromium or arsenic. ACQ is considered safe for residential use.

  • Copper azole (CA): An antifungal and anti-termite agent that's generally considered safe for indoor and outdoor residential use.

  • Imidacloprid: Kills insects

  • Dichlorooctylisothiazolinone (DCOI): Kills fungi and bacteria

  • Tebuconazole: Fights off copper-tolerant fungi

  • Propiconazole: Fights off copper-tolerant fungi
Pressure-treated lumber should not be burned because the vaporization of the chemicals can be harmful

Can they rebuild? Supply and demand. The costs will be through the roof due to shortages of skilled trades, materials, and every contractor raising the prices beyond what was previously fair.

Will there of necessity be EPA cleansing of the soil?
How many will claim secondary cancers and respiratory problems like those who worked at the World Trade Center site? Now also paid for by Fed Govt. on monies borrowed in the form of bonds. More interest payments.

As yet we don't know the half.

Fema of course is already there. Funny how the folks in W NC and GA waited for help for so long.

It’s a not a red/blue issue, just like the San Andreas fault in CA is not. Appreciating natural scenery and green vegetation is common to everyone. That part of CA has very little rain, low humidity, no inland water and certain recurring winds prevalent enough to be famously named.

Perhaps in hindsight, although it has cropped up many times over the years, the density of residential structures there proximate to vegetation growth is long-term incompatible with the natural environment, but that’s not a function of one party’s political policies.

Do you want a politician to legislate your vegetation growth and structural offsets? Coastal regions are hurricane prone. The Mississippi floods. We let people make choices. We help them when it doesn’t work out. Our own won’t either, sooner or later.

Insurance is a "Risk Pool" and we're all in it. We will all pay more, throughout the country, for insurance when the payout for these fires come due. We are in that "pool" and we all should understand that!

May god help those people make it through these trying times!

Rant Over, ... heading to the reloading bench.
That is the bottom line. Actuarial Science is actually science. Kamala blames the insurance companies. Everybody blames the insurance companies for everything whether it be medicine or private property. The alternative should "everyone" get their wish is significantly higher cost should something happen to you or the property you decline insurance on.

My heart goes out to those who have lost everything.

While fortunately I now live in Central Texas, I was born and raised in SoCal (left there 50 years ago), in one of the areas that now are engulfed in flames (Hastings Ranch in Pasadena, right next to Sierra Madre). I offer that only for perspective.

I do not disagree with most comments about the myriad of political problems faced by Californians, and the effects of those policies. What I do disagree with is laying the blame completely, or at least in large part, on the current leadership for everything that contributed to this disaster. The root problem did not happen solely during Newsome's administration. Don't get me wrong. Newsome and his cronies are gutter slime and have exacerbated the problem. But it was created and allowed to be created over the decades by both blue and red administrations. Dense construction in the face of questionable water supply, construction in areas known to be in fire/flood zones, construction with non-flame retarding materials...all part of the problem, all allowed by generations of politicians, all about tax revenues and money, with little invested in the infrastructure to support it.
