smk pointed bullets

IMO, after trimming and pointing, the bc may well actually reduce a tad but I think the uniformity is considerably better after pointing and is worthwhile for 1000 and beyond. Some depends on how good a lot of bullets is prior to pointing them up as well as how well pointed up they are when done. Others certainly have more experience in long range than I, so take it for what it's worth.

Depends on the game, distance, and experience. It does help even out the bc variations and can clean up some of the dispersion on target. Many find the wind to be the biggest factor in the bullet not going where it is intended. I haven't been at the range too many times and thought... wow bullet pointing is clearly holding that shooter from reaching the top of the podium.

They took almost 2 min off my 1000 yard setting. To me that is less time in flight so that means less negative effects from conditions. I am not a 1000 guy per say but using SMK that I sorted have allowed me to shoot from 100 to 1000 with them and be competitive.
Question: does it matter if after they're pointed their OAL vary. . . .say, like .012"?

In measuring my 169 SMK's, which are factory pointed, I find that much variation in their OAL's.

I had a lot of range time on my hands a number of years back and got real involved in running my own tests on weight sorting bullets, base to ogive measuring, tipping, leveling the tip, etc.

I concluded that if I were shooting 500 yards or more, I'd definitely, at least weight sort, tip and slight level of the tips. I had bought another tool to do that. The accuracy was only very slightly improved - but the reduced rate of drop would make it worthwhile. There are other bullets that will drop less just due to the BC differential, but if you are out to improve that particular bullet by doing so- I think it is worthwhile.
