Pointing Berger 7mm (180 grs.) hybrid bullets

What is your procedure for pointing bullets? Trim meplate first than point or point than trim?
And let's see your before and after pictures of your pointed bullets.
Thanks

BIGMAC,
Go to youtube and look up "Whidden bullet pointing die". You can also go to Johns website WHIDDEN GUNWORKS. We do NOT recommend any bullet meplat uniforming or pointing of our hunting bullets used on game.

I personally like how point-trim-point looks. With that in mind, trim then point can result in the point being closed onto the burr created from trimming first. So it can become trim-debur-point, and at that point you likely haven't gained any bc over just pointing.

I also lose bullets to tearing jackets during trimming. It isn't many and they are fine foulers.

I actually look at each lot of bullets and decide what they need.

I've just started in the tipping world. I bought the Hoover die and tipped a few bullets. Upon a close inspection of bullets (Berger) that were tipped without trim I was disappointed. Some of the tips looked like they would create more drag and inaccuracy issues after tipping. I found the meplat trimming inserts for my Giraud Trimmer and now I am experimenting with tipping after trimming. So far so good but I need to shoot a few to make sure it is worth the efforts. BTW, all I have done are Hybrids in 6, 6.5 plus a very few 7MM VLDs.

Trim, then point. Before trimming. look at each bullet for especially uneven meplats or obvious nose folds. Either usually indicates a nose forming problem. They are relegated to foulers. Use a sharp cutter and spin it fast, that almost completely eliminates tearing. Lubricate the bullet point with a tiny spot of Imperial Die Wax so that the die slides over the nose instead of pushing. Do not try to completely close the point. That will likely produce a bulge just below the die.

Here's a shot of 180 Hybrids before and after.

My Montour trimmer has a conventional trimmer plus a tiny countersink which removes the burr and restores the tip so that it can be pointed evenly and accurately. It's a PITA because it involves an extra step, but worth it for my competition ammo.

BTW, if you want the pointed bullets in 7MM without having to do it yourself, you can buy pointed 183 SMK off the shelf. They are damn nice looking bullets and I've seen some impressive 1250 yard groups from a buddy's rifle with them.

I do the same as Steve Blair. I take a sampling of 10 bullets and find the shortest 3. I set my cutter to that measurement and trim them all. Then I point them to a uniform dimension. * These are for 1K use only, don't waste your time on bullets at closer range.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

Same for me.
