Silly mistake, can it be rectified?

I used to keep my "mistakes" on a shelf above my press as a reminder of my stellar reloading abilities. I told friends they were new calibers I invented. My laughing gave it away though.

Or does it look like this?

That looks like a nice "gas check"! It would be tricky to chamber the barrel for it. That might come back, with a good press-mounted bullet puller.;)

I shot mine gun was on bags string on trigger ten feet awy
Bam. Probably not the smartest thing to do. I then got clamping
lock rings for all my dies reset all them marked with white out
to make sure lock ring has not mouved when I change dies.

I was just learning at the time and it was no big loss $20 bucks or something, but it still kinda got me to to just chunk the cases..but better safe than sorry.. When I called rcbs they told me to set the die up per instructions and that was the proper headspace for the cartridge.. I know they have to make the die for all chambers and I have seen a new colt thats .004 longer than mine but dang....009..

There is something about sizing a case reloaders do not understand and if you talked to RCBS there is something they do not understand about instructions.

I have RCBS dies and I have RCBS instructions, when there is a break down on the reloaders part the instructions turn into destructions. For example; The die is designed to return the case to minimum length, the reloaders does not understand minimum length is the same as full length sized. I could ask; what is full length sized but doing so would just make everyone angry. When I return a 30/06 case to minimum length/full length size the case is .005" shorter from the shoulder to the case head than a go-gage length chamber from the shoulder of the chamber to the bolt face.

The case does not have head space; I use the length of the case from the shoulder to the case head to off set the length of the chamber.

but dang....009

If your die is reducing the length of the case from the shoulder to the case head .009" get your money back; but if you are talking about a fired case your chamber is no go-gage length. That would be .004" longer from the shoulder of the chamber to the bolt face than a go-gage length chamber (if it is a 30/06)

Again, I have a 30/06 chamber that is .002" longer than a filed reject length chamber, that is .016" longer than a minimum length/full length sized case. I do not follow the instructions, instead I use a feeler gage to set the die .014" off of the shell holder and then size 280 Remington cases. For those that can keep up that gives me the (magic) .002" clearance.

You know what those were not my rcbs SB dies.. Just remembered it was when I first started so they had to be a set of Fl Lee dies.. Sorry.. Incorrect info..
I don't use the feeler gauge just screw the die in till I get .003 to .004 for use in an automatic..
I do like the idea though, seems much faster setup time..

Been there done that

As I have always said; "I find it most difficult to move the shoulder of a case (back) with a die that has case body support", and that just seems to make everyone angry.

When I want to move the shoulder back on a case I invert (screw the die in upside down from the bottom) a case forming/trim die. When using a forming die upside down it loosed its ability to support the case body, and that is the reason the case body takes on the appearance of an accordion/bellows. And then when a reloader wonders if it is time to anneal the case, that will never happen.

No it doesn't.
I have about 100 FL dies that I have measured and they do not make the case head to shoulder length shorter than a go gage chamber. The normal length of a RCBS FL die is half way between the length of the go and the no go gauges.

When I return a 30/06 case to minimum length/full length size the case is .005" shorter from the shoulder to the case head than a go-gage length chamber from the shoulder of the chamber to the bolt face.

Hey, did anyone notice "Professor Irwin Corey" died recently? Don't know what made me think of that. ...

I also noticed most of us on here have given up on arguing semantics and nomenclature with the world's "foremost authority"........which is a good thing.
