SILHOUETTE

used to shoot some small bore years ago. Recently bought a lever gun and started shooting club matches at Haltom City. When I get some free time I'll try out Coolidge. There's plenty of matches in the north Texas area

I have watched a couple of the lever gun matches....now that looks really fun and it looks like it gets right to the fundamentals. Holler sometime maybe I can barrow a lever gun from my buddy (he shoots lever matches) and come up there and shoot. They have that class down here as well I believe

I recall a story of 2 PA chuck hunters who shot at McDonald. Farmer came out and was watching, asked, how far ya shooting? When they pointed out a mound some 300 plus out, he called them liars. When a chuck showed up, one said to the other "Ya gonna shoot him the easy way or the hard way?", motioning to a rest. Partner said "Easy way", stood up and shot the chuck offhand.

Farmer got up and walked away.

Don’t know if that is true one or your funning me but it’s funny and I like it lol. That would about sum up the skill of a good silhouette shooter.

Love the quotes btw

There’s a small but loyal cadre of folks around here that keep it going. Between Haltom City, The Arlington Sportsman’s club, Dallas pistol club, Graham and Coolidge there is a match about every weekend. Mostly lever guns and some field pistol.
After the F-class nationals, I’ll be shooting the club matches at HC and Arlington to hopefully gain a little skill. I used to shoot mid 30s with a 22 but so far I’ve only managed mid 20s with my trusty Winchester

I've shot both BP and smallbore silhouette. The BP was where I had the most success. The feeling you get when hitting a ram at 500m, watching it fall, and hearing the "clang" is special. Both are fun and rewarding competitions. Browning 45-90 with 536gr postells and Swiss 1 1/2 powder. Anschutz MS-64 with RWS Target.

Sorry anyone was put-off by a bad introduction, clubs are often a funny bunch.

To the original poster, there seems to be an active association in your area;

No worries man. Believe it or not I get it. Yes sir they shoot out there regularly. Every one I have met over the years were great folks. They have always been welcoming. I have really been thinking about doing another couple of matches.

I was just wondering if anyone on here shoots it. Like I said before it seems to me like it would be about the cheapest competition to start out, and Like someone earlier said it is really cool how elegant of a sport it is. It is crazy just how much skill it takes to excel in it. Well I guess all the other shooting disciplines do as well but a person with good skill and marginal equipment can still compete in my opinion.

I was at the range just shooting on an off match day several years ago and a guy was there shooting, if memory serves me, a 45-90. We talked a bit and he let me shoot at a couple of rams. It was really groovy for sure

Any silhouette shooters on here? I understand there is probably sites dedicated to just that. I never seen anything on here so don’t know if it’s taboo lol
Not taboo. Just challenging. Over the last 15 years I’ve probably seen 3 ranges drop smallbore after club participation drops. And it drops because it’s hard. Can’t buy too many wins. Some complain about the Frankenhunter guns but I’ve seen some low scores shot with those too:rolleyes:. (Please don’t ask how I know)
It’s a sport more about the shooter than the rifle, but in smallbore it’s mostly about ammo and repeatable scopes.

This might be my first post here but... I belong to a club here in Houston, Bayou Rifles, and have been shooting smallbore silhouette for 3.5 years and air rifle silhouette for about 2 years.

I have created a master calendar of all silhouette matches in Texas as well as the major matches in adjoining states. Check it out and share the link with other folks looking for silhouette matches in Texas.

Also, we are in the early stages of crating a "Gulf Coast Silhouette League" to cover the activities of the Texas and Louisiana silhouette communities since we both attend each other's major state/regional matches. We hope once we get this going it will be able to be taken up by other silhouette communities across the country to show that there are many of us still active in the game.

Please feel free to send me an email or PM if you find anything missing or incorrect on the Texas Silhouette calendar. Thanks!

HillBilly, If the match was at Mexia,TX it could have been me. I've let more than a few shoot that rifle and all were impressed by the accuracy. I think that smallbore silhouette is more difficult as you are standing while shooting. The best I ever shot 22 silhouette was 37 and BP was 36.

It could have been that was some time ago. I was impressed for sure. I have talked to a couple over the years out there shooting rigs like that. The one thing that always impressed me other than accuracy is the barrel life some of they folks sai they were getting.

One of the guys I saw out there a lot over the years recently passed away I was told. I think he lived in the metroplex. I hated to hear of his passing he was a really great guy. A buddy of mine shot with him quite a bit. The last time I saw him they were finishing up a lever match. He insisted that I shoot his rifle. He adjusted the sights and I hit the first turkey. I don’t hit many turkeys lol. He made me shoot another and I hit that one. I told him that it was pure luck. I really didn’t want to shoot rather miss but he insisted and I think I missed the next five or so. He was one of the good ones

Thank you sir. I will look into that

I agree hard as hell lol. I agree with the rest of what you said as well.

Smallbore was my first real rifle competition at what's now Ben Avery shooting range, like in 1978. I did the big guns, including pistol later on too.

I got into the BPCR Vintage Sniper division a few years ago but that was with a friends borrowed expensive rifles. I lost interest after a while.

Just on Sunday a friend and I broke out the airgun silhouettes. We used a FWB300 and a 601, with match aperture sights at reduced distances because both rifles are at 6 ftlbs energy and, well, neither of us see too good anymore, lol.

Smallbore is on my list of to-do's for this winter, that is if they hold that match down there anymore.

Always a soft spot in me for Sillywet.

They closed the range down here last year during November and December. I think they will do the same this year. Not sure tho. My step daughter and her family lives about 20 miles from the range in Graham. I have not shot a match in years and don’t have a good rig to do so. Sure been thinking about putting something together this winter myself. I’m over due for some humiliation lol

We have some local matches here, and I've wanted to give it a try, but the closest thing to an appropriate rifle that I have is an M1A (with irons). Would that be a waste of time? A new rifle isn't in the budget at this point.
You just gotta find the right match. I would recommend looking for a Cowboy Lever Action (highpower) match, as that uses iron sights and has a max range of 200 yards with full-size targets. You would have to compete as "unclassified" I think, or as my club calls it, "cheater class" (it's all in fun). In my experience, ALMOST everyone is very welcoming of new shooters, and they're all there to have a good time. Go do a match, have fun, and you will learn a lot about your sight adjustments and offhand technique.

I used to shoot it a lot and in the last year have began doing it again.

Our local club holds a once a week league where we shoot 200M for everything. It’s not quite as humbling that way.

3-4 tines a year we shoot a full course shoot as well.

It’s the ultimate in marksmanship in my opinion.

What club? I'm considering trying to do a scaled match at our local club at 200 yards.
