Sightron STAC 1-7, anybody got one?

I know this is not up the alley of most shooters here, but I am looking for a new scope for my 18" AR15. This is a general purpose rifle that I like to be able to do just about anything with, from varmint/ predator hunting to 6-800yds shots on steel targets. I am looking for something in the 1-6 or 1-8 range and have about $1000 to spend. I saw the Sightron STAC 1-7 scope on SWFA, but I see very few reviews of it on line. I am debating between the sightron STAC 1-7 and the Burris XTR II 1.5-8. If you have any first hand experience with either of these scopes please chime in here and let me know what you think of them. Thanks a lot!

Hey Mason, I'm in the same boat as you and I love Sightron stuff!! I'm trying to keep mine light as possible for my new 14.5" AR, I'm about to get the Leupold VX-6, 1-6 with the Fire Dot 4 reticle. I contacted Leupold the "dot" covers 1 Moa @t 100yrds .
I want the heavy outside posts with the dot for close shots and the finer inner wires for precision shots out to 300yrds+

I am a dealer for Sightron in Canada and use a range of Sightron products for plinking and competition.

The STAC1-7 allows for a huge range of use including off the barrel shooting to fig 11 at 600m.

It is one of the few scopes where I can set at 1x and my vision is clearer through the scope. I can aim at my feet.. literally. Objects are clear from as little as 4ft away.

You will love this scope for an AR that is used for CQB and DMR style shooting.

Enjoy...

Jerry

The Sightron 1-7 has 2 problems: the reticle is too busy and obstructs too much of the field of view and the reticle illumination does not work in bright sunlight. This is a common problem with a lot of the cqb scopes. I wish some scope maker would make a 1-6 scope that satisfies these two issues for a reasonable price.

I believe the US Optics 1-8 will do everything you are asking. They have a full on sunlight bright red dot, but you pay USO prices.

Haven't tried them but I've read god things about the SWFA 1-6, it uses a ring not a dot, and the new Bushnell Elite Tactical 1-6 also uses an illuminated ring for CQB 1x shooting. I was leaning toward the SWFA till I saw the Bushey

I think the IRMOA reticle covers less then most heavy line BDC style reticle. Have you spent some time with these scopes?

The reticle is more likely to be critised as too thin then too thick. That center dot is not very big... those lines are quite thin. They do work great when trying to shoot LR at 7X. I can quarter a fig 11 target at 600m... this is not a thick reticle.

If you want really uncluttered, there is a German 4A post.

The "dim" dot is kind of an interesting thing. When you are in bright light, the black reticle is obvious and easily seen. The center black dot is a no brainer to see and pick up. At low mag and CQB distances, it works as intuitively as any dot I have used.

As you move to dimmer light, the red dot becomes more visible as the black reticle becomes harder to see as in all scopes.... you don't need to play with the power setting. I just set the dot at the desired setting for very low light situations and leave it alone.

Although this is not a designed feature, this adjustment happens all on its own. The darker the surroundings, the brighter the dot... and vice versa.

If you were to look through the scope while moving through a house, passing windows and unlit rooms, you perceive the dot self adjusting illumination so there is no need to muck with the power setting as you do with pretty much every scope and dot out there.

Ever go into a dark room with the red dot set for outdoor light and get that blinding flare? Or have to move from inside to an outdoor target and the dot is gone? Not with this scope.

It works very well and makes no difference how fast you change ambient light so you are never without a reticle to view and aim with. And you don't need to keep mucking with the power setting which is not only slow, it can prove a liability in the wrong circumstance.

A most useful quirk of the way the dot and reticle integrate. For those that actually have this scope, try it.

I ordered the Leupold VX-6 #4 German Fire Dot from Scott at Liberty Optics today. I'll post up some reports when I get my rifle from Seekins.
