Should LV and HV Classes Be Merged?

A couple of c-clamps, an old school Davidson style barrel vise and a bench at the range. It's been done this way for a really long time and no biggie to do on a BR rifle.

The barrel vise is made of 2024-T3 aluminum and features grade 8 nuts and washers.. Will accommodate barrels up to 1-1/2 inch.

I have the vice it's just mounting it securely and torquing the barrel back down, then if you are using the area behind the benches you are taking up more space (at least I am!).

Simply changing a LV rifle to HV with putting a HV bbl on it makes for a nose heavy and ill handling rifle, IME. The other way around works ok but I'm not a fan of just using a heavier bbl. It may be done but I don't know of anyone doing it that way, myself. A separate weight system in the butt would make it more workable if all the details are worked out with doing that in mind. It may be more common than I realize but I don't know of anyone doing it. There used to be a few and may still be.

Looking at the posts in this thread, I get the feeling that many have never shot a sanctioned short range group match. This reminds me of fellows posting about tuners when they had never used one. I think that it would be better if we left this subject to those who had actually done this kind of shooting. All you need is one rifle that weighs no more than 10.5 pounds to be fully competitive in all three of the "bag gun" classes. Anyone who has shot the sport knows this.

I mount my barrle vice to the bench beside my loading box with 2 squeeze clamps. Takes up maybe 8 inches. Yes i have a removable butt plate to add weight to balance out the barrles, and the ranges i shoot at have alot of shooters who employ the same system.
I have been shooting NBRSA for over 30years so it is not my first rodeo thus i do have have a bit of experience in the short range BR game.

To maintain the legal weight parameters calculate the barrle length weight with the stock weights to "Balance out" the rifle. Work great and promotes innovation in the sport of extream accuracy. Isn't that why we are in this game?

I'm sure, after doing it the first time or two I'm sure you had it down pat and could transition easily from one to the other.

No offense taken at all. I was just clarifying what i have and others in my region have done that works surprisingly well.
My toes are good( beside i wear steel toed metatarsal boots lol)

I have do dog in this fight since I shoot F-TR, but it seems to me that this is a non-problem. If I understand the rules correctly, there is no reason a guy can't shoot an LV gun in HV class other than a perceived precision handicap that appears to be pretty small. Maybe I am not reading this right.

I think you are dead on except when considering cost between lv and hv. I'm not sure what the cost would be be but can it be that much? Someone 'xplain it to me (stock difference only?).

No real difference in cost. A lighter stock does often cost more though.

Ubr has a 13.5 max in all but unlimited class, so anyone can shoot their 10.5lb gun with no changes. Just show up and shoot.

The useless class in NBRSA Group is Sporter. What I mean by useless is nobody takes advantage of the more liberal stock and barrel contour rules that govern the class.

I would venture a guess that since this thread was instituted several years ago, nothing has changed.

99.9% of the shooters at any given NBRSA Registered Match will be shooting their LV in Sporter. Add to that, a flat 99% will be shooting a legal LV in HV.

The only time I shoot a true HV is if I decided to shoot my 30BR Score Rifle in a Group Match.

We will be shooting The NBRSA Texas State LV and Sporter this week end in New Braunfels.

I will make a note and report on how many shooters actually take advantage of the more liberal rules and actually shoot a dedicated Sporter in that class, or just simply shoot their LV.

I understand your “dead horse” analogy, but what’s disappearing is NBRSA group shooting in general. Not imminent, but certainly in an ominous decline - dwindling match attendance, few if any new venues, rising cost, etc, …

Here’s some ideas (probably nothing new):

• Combine LV & HV into one class with a 6mm bore and 10.5lb weight limits. All of the serious and long time group guys have this equipment and can tear-it-up with their 6PPC’s
• Create a new class limited to 30 caliber only, #13.5 guns for all the VFS “club” shooters to compete in. Seems to be a lot of these guys that won’t take the plunge into a dedicated #10.5 group gun to be on-par with the field. Besides, familiarity breads confidence.
• Develop a portable moving backer system – place one in each region. Make it available to new venues as an incentive to host a sanctioned match.

Score rifles are legal to shoot in HV now, is that correct?
Why would changing the HV rules make the score shooters bring along their rifles and compete??

Or to put it simply, why do you have to change the HV rules to encourage the score shooters to participate?

Would I travel to attend matches which are currently two day LV & HV matches, to only shoot for one day? Most likely not.

A simpler question would be "How do you make the sport cheaper and more affordable" so it is more affordable to participate?
