ShotMarker or Silver Mountain

I’ve seen numerous .308’s, and .223’s use ShotMarkers at 1k. Among the .308’s were Palma rifles using 155’s, and M1As using 185’s. Among the .223’s were 20” AR’s, I’m not certain of the bullet used.
It’s possible that your load won’t work at 1k with a ShotMarker, but there are loads that will. Adapt, and overcome.

The common features of loads that won't make 1250 fps at sea level at 1000 yards are: F-TR loads in .223 and .308 that use bullets less than 90 grains (in .223) and 200 grains (in .308) and meet SAAMI pressure specs.

Close to sea level, "adapt and overcome" most likely means exceeding SAAMI pressure specs which requires considerable care and experience to be done safely (not recommended for less experienced reloaders) and even when done safely, tends to reduce both barrel life and brass life.

Shooters should make a conscious and informed choice whether the cost and convenience the ShotMarker system is worth the added cost and inconvenience of maintaining 1250 fps at 1000 yards. There are remote targeting systems that work great for 1100 fps at the target.

Minimum velocity for ShotMarker is Mach 1.03, which at room temp is 1160 fps.

Anything measured between 1160 and 1125 fps is ignored, otherwise you'd end up with
a) a shot reported with very poor accuracy, and
b) an extra shot in the middle of the target when shooting at close range as the muzzle blast hits the target and is interpreted as a shot

Not to keep selling after the OP has been sold on something, but first hand experience with both. My silver mountain is sitting in a box and the Shotmarker is what I switched to and use all the time.

Adam is great to work with if you have any issues. I did not have issues, but had some questions and he was able to find a solution to an unusual question/need!

I own a silver mountain because my club is set up for them. If I had to do it again I’d go with shotmarker. I’ve had a few issues with my solo at 600 and it sucks driving back and forth trying to get connection.

I’m considering either the ShotMarker or the Silver Mountain target system. For those who own one or both can you chime in on the pluses and minuses of each system.

I had a Silver Mtn for 4 years+ and it worked great. It got trashed when wind blew down the target frame and they fixed it for free. The distributor also helped when temp sensor got squashed and I made the repairs myself. Great product.
Started using a Shotmarker this last year and sold the Silver Mtn. The shotmarker is newer with more features and is easier to setup....not to mention much less expensive.

I have completed on both systems, but do not own either. My experience has been both are about equal as a user when working, but the Silver Mountain seems more error prone and less reliable.

This might be a concern for recreational shooters, but I don't believe most competitive F/TR shooters are playing within the limits of SAAMI specs. If they were they wouldn't be using .308 Palma brass

You made me look. Just checked last 1,000 yard match and was around 1500 FPS at target with a 200g Berger.

I've known a number who made HM at mid range with SAAMI specs. These shooters are competitive at the local level in F/TR.

I thought we were talking about 1,000 yards.

Requiring new loads to shoot 1000 yards is not likely to attract many new shooters to long range. Requiring loads that exceed SAAMI pressure specs for the targets to work may be fine with the better and more experienced shooters, but it is a stupid move if the goal is to keep growing the sport.

The targets work by measuring sound. If the bullets are not breaking the sound barrier, they aren’t producing enough sound to accurately measure. It doesn’t really have anything to do with growing the sport, it’s just the way it is. The number of shooters scared away by this aren’t going to outnumber the shooters who love the convenience of shooting on e-targets, whether that’s right or wrong. For reference, I shoot a pretty normal Palma load of Berger 155 hybrids at about 3020 FPS, and my on-target velocity at 1000 yards is generally around 1450 at 900’ elevation. Reaching the velocity needed to make the targets work is not really much of an issue on most circumstances.

Many are. Running Berger 200.20Xs over Varget at ~2650 fps from a 30" barrel is well within the SAAMI pressure limit for .308 Win, and there are a LOT of F-TR shooters using something very close to that. That is not to say there aren't a few that choose to run higher pressure loads; of course there are. But it's not like the vast majority are doing it...well except maybe down under, where pretty much everyone runs .308 loads that make peoples eyes bug out when they hear what they are. ;)

the SMT has worked well for me and I recently started having connection issues with my solo, I bought mine used, and spoke with SMT and they told me to ship the two hubs back and they would upgrade the WiFi components the day they received it and ship it back. Great customer service, easy to contact and easy to work with. Shotmarkers are excellent units as well, just wanted to add my personal experience.
