Short range BR scope?

PopCharlie

I started with nothing. I still have some left.

I'm having a new rifle built for short range (100 to 300 yards) score shooting. I'm interested in what the thinking is for scope choices. I have Nightforce scopes on 2 other rifles. While I like them, I'm considering other scopes. I have looked at Vortex Golden Eagle and Leupold. Equipment lists for matches show mostly Nightforce and Leupold, with a few other brands mixed in, like Sightron, and Weaver. I have decided to either stick with Nightforce or try a Vortex. Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks

I prefer the March variable. I use a 10-60x. It's nice to be able to dial back during heavy mirage and keep shooting. Optical quality is excellent and they hold point of impact.

Your Choice on NF....is a good one, however do give Sightron a look as well.
My eyes prefer the 10-50x60 when Im shooting F-class.

If you have to make weight to compete anywhere you are planning on shooting, I would be sure how much your new build is going to tip the scales before purchasing the glass.
Vortex has a nice discount for Veterans and seem to hold up well for the guys I have seen using them. For score shooting, I use a March 36-55 EPZ sitting on a 30 Major.
Congrats on your new build, throw up a few pics when it makes it home.....

Rick

Just got into the 100-400 yard precision game last year.
Many Nightforce, 5-6 (guess) Sightron 10-50X60s, 2-3 Vortex Golden Eagles.

I picked up a used Sightron SIII 10-50X60 the other month.
Installed on rifle, but haven't had to the range yet. (It is hunting season! )

I haven't seen any Leupolds yet. Doesn't mean they aren't out there, just haven't seen one at a local match.

Remember to see what weight scope you can use for a 13.5 gun score rifle.... I hope you did your home work plus Weaver is history a fixed power is the lightest there is about 8-10 oz. difference in weight. I have friends that are using the 45 power Sightron's on 1000 yard guns to make weight and they are doing good..... jim

Thanks for all the comments. I will ultimately wait to see how much weight I'll have to work with for my new 13.5 lb gun. March scopes are not out of the question, but the price tag is hard to justify. I'd rather save some $$ for a good joystick front rest.

What I see on the line are older Weaver T36, Luepold 40 or 45's and NF competitions, 1-2 March's. Never a Sightron or a Vortex.

You must be shooting with some good ol boys in the back 40. Nothing wrong with that but I see lots of NF, Sightrons, and Golden Eagles / Vortex. Weavers, Leupolds not to often. Also see some March but not a lot.

Well if you consider IBS matches in central Ct. "in the back 40" I guess I am.
As for " good ol boys" most of them are.

That explains the scope choices, 100 and 200 yds do not require the optics that shooting longer distances demand. I shoot a lot of ground hog matches that usually go to 500 yds here in Pa. If you can not see bullet holes at 400 and 500 yrs you will not be competitive. Some of the matches do not allow spotting scopes so what is on your rifle is what you are limited too. I started out shooting IBS but got bored with very few 300 yd matches plus most of the matches were a good distance away. I am glad I started in the IBS as I learned a lot from good shooters. Now I can shoot every weekend, usually a match Sat and a match Sunday and drive no longer usually than an hour and a half. Not to many IBS matches left here now days. The 30BR did not help the score matches which were the majority of what was available. The UBR which I like has not taken hold here probably due to the popularity of the ground hog matches. Us old IBS shooters hold our own. Seems the young guys have drifted towards the long range steel game. I wish more of the old IBS guys would try the hog matches and have some fun. If conditions are decent either PPC or the 30BR with a good shooter is competitive at 500 yds.
