New Build 7mm08

I plan on building a 7mm08 on a remington 700 long action and i am seriously considering the Broughton 5c 1in8 twist barrel in standard palma contour. This gun will be a 1000yd gun and also used for hunting. That why im leaning toward the standard and not the heavy. Any advice would be appreciated.

I think you should do some research on the 284 Win. I built one last year and well it's just got a mess more horsepower than the 7-08 and in a long action the 284 really comes into it's own. If you want a 7-08 then by all means do it but in my opinion I think you would be better off with a 284 Win or the 280. but a 162 A-Max @ 3000fps sure doesn't drop a lot out to 1K. Later,

Kirk

Even though I'm a big fan of the 7-08 I think I would go with the advice given previously and go with the .284, especially since you already plan on using a long action.

Again a die-hard 7-08 fan but the .284 idea is sound. You can always download is ever needed. Only slight negative is brass supply

good shooting

I just want to say that I am not trying to bash your project as I own 2 7mm08s for strictly hunting purposes in light weight carry guns, but with the long action I would definatley check into the others for 1000 yards. Why deal with all the drop and drift? I have been working on a hunting/600-1000 yards f-class gun for a while now and my 6.5-270 is working great but as soon as the barrel burns out I will be looking at the 284, 280 and improved versions with my long action!

shaun i have just posted on here with my 338 switch gun and ur browning ive tried to post on ur site still no luck ur a great guy to deal with my 338-06 AI is sub mao with only 30 rounds down the tube ur 300 after the stock adj is a one holer at 200

I looked over the 284 and actually planned of building one. However my gunsmith/friend doensnt have a die for one. He just built a 7mm08 and is pushing 162 amax right at 2900fps. He said that i could try the 7mm08 and if i felt like i needed more horse power we could rechamber to the 284win. I figured id give it a shot because he is getting some excellent groups with his all the way out to 1000yds.

Must be a very long barrel plus a -hot- load!

I say go for it since you've got the re-chamber deal if your unsatisfied....I would I'm another 7mm-08 fanatic!!!

Looking at some short action v short action data the 08 only gives up about 100fps to the 284.
I'm betting in a long action comparison with the proper throat dimensions the 08 is a more efficient cartridge and narrows the velocity gap.

Why not? The 168 grain 7mm bullet is superior compared to a 30 caliber 168. And the .308 is still used at 1000 yards. 7mm-08 168 grain berger is a great combo.

Went to range today with my bud and his 708. I also took my 7mm mag in runger #1. Its just a huntin rifle with a 3-9x40 bushnell trophy doa recticle. Using the recticle i made consistant kill hits out to 600 yard with a 100 yard zero. Holding the 500 yard dot about 5 inches above bullseye was dead on at 600. Any way enough on that.

In the 7mag I had 160grain accubonds loaded running 3040fps. The 708 was loaded with 162grain amax bullets and was consistant at 2890 to 2900fps. Couldnt believe the 7mag was only 140 or so fps faster. The 708 was shooting pretty good today also.

Don't let'm start making you second guess yerself. ;)
You go with that 7-08 and have fun!
No matter what you do, there will always be a better gun :D

After all, most gun's shoot better than most people any way's.
