Short barrel 7mm08 ?

Anyone have any experience with a 7mm08 with a 18 or 20 inch barrel. Typically i see 24 inch barrels on 7mm stuff so not sure
Also was thinking of 8 twist to shoot heavy bullets.
Accuracy issues with short barrel in 7mm08?
Any info would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Accuracy should be fine, you'd give up a little in MV is all. I think the Win Mod70 version has a 22" barrel.

It would be some what louder with higher muzzle pressure and a bigger muzzle flash, but I can't imagine it would be noticeably different from a 308 (or any other 308 based case) in a similar configuration.

You shouldn't have any accuracy problems with loads tailored to the barrel. Remington XP100s in 7/08 shot brilliantly with 15" barrels with 1-9.5" twist. Look up loading info for them and you should get an idea of velocities. 150 grain bullets ran 2,400-2,500 fps in those barrels. You would probably gain roughly around 100-150 fps with 18 to 20 inch barrel. Perhaps more.

Both of my sons shot Remington 700 7mm-08 youth rifles with 20" barrels. They killed their 1st bucks with them, their 1st elk with them and their 1st coyotes with them. They are handy little rifles and they both shoot very well with absolutely nothing done to them. My wife has taken over 1 of them for her elk rifle.

I shoot a 20" 7-08 AI.
A 7-08 is not big enough for heavy bullets. I wouldn't shoot over a 150 and it shoots fine out of a 1-10. Absolutely no need for a 1-8.
I shoot a 7-08 with a 22” barrel. This rifle is 28 years old. I had it rebarreled 3 years ago to the 22. For the first 25 it was a 20” #5 Lilja 10 twist. It’s still a #5 Lilja 10 twist but a 22 now. I have always shot 140 class bullets. 7.5 lbs. with scope. It’s my favorite, and the best handling rifle I own.

Thanks for info this is what im looking to do with my rifle

As Mr. Tooley says. Above 150gr for a SAAMI standard 7mm-08, you lose alot!
The bullet is simply too long and takes up powder space. Ala 260 Rem vs 6.5 Creedmoor in an AR platform.
You could throat ream, to seat the long heavy bullets out further, but you'd be missing out.
The 7mm-08 with 120-140 grain bullets just flat works!
Used as such i'm sure you'll come to love it, as many of us have!

You'll lose about 50 fps from the 22" barrel in your 20". Nothing to fret over.

I shoot an XP-100 with a 15" Barrel in 7-08. I am getting 2400Fps with a 160gr bullet and shoots accurately out to 500 meters and it averages .4MOA. I also shot the Remington Factory 140Gr ammo and got over 2700Fps out of it but the accuracy was awful.

What is the increase in case capacity from 7-08 to 7-08AI?
Thank you
Filippo
Mine was almost 1.5gr over the standard 7mm-08.
Stevens 200 with 22" barrel.

PPU cases
Fed 210M
140gr Berger VLD
COAL 2.995"
The following are accuracy loads, NOT max loads.
RL17 netted me 2,916 fps
H414, and Alliant PP2000MR neted 2,832 fps.
IMR4350 was 2,783 fps.

With ES 6fps, SD 2 fps over 10 shots, the nod went to PP2000MR.

I have a 20" 7mm-08 Browning MicroHunter and it shoots fine. Usually below MOA. I wouldn't go less than a 9 twist from my personal experience. I have dealt with (2) 10 twist 7mm rifles barrels and neither would shoot anything above a 120gr bullet at our elevation. One was a 7mm-08 and the other was a 280 Rem. Both barrels were from the same manufacture which I won't mention the manufacture's name and that he says he doesn't make bad barrels. But, it does rhyme with wilja.

Definitely wouldn't want to run anything heavier than a 150 in a short action to get the most from the round. I've heard lots of guys running the 162s and giving up some velocity. Still plenty of performance but not all the case capacity available without a LA. Accuracy in any case should not be any different with a shorter barrel. The 7-08 is a great little round. Wouldn't need an 8 twist unless your running low drag bullets over 180 grains. The 9 twist will run the 180s.

There was an article in Precision Shooting Magazine (out of print now) back around the early 1990's (and I'm going from memory here) and they did the barrel chop thing with 7mm-08, and from what I remember they had stellar accuracy with a 22, or was it a 21 &3/4 in barrel. They were shooting inside an old abandon ware house and were shooting to 300 yards and got bench rest one hole groupings.

I don't remember the load data, bullet weight.... I might have that old rag around here yet. Lemme look.

After this great info i think im going to do a 18" barrel. This is a woods gun for hunting whitetail out to 300 yards but i want it to be for walking and pushing deer.
