Short action thumpers?

That sounds easy enough, no? Isn't there a standard set of go/no-go gauges when chambering belted mag barrels? A 450 Marlin reamer should be easier to get than 458x2. It would probably wind up being more like a 458x2.030 done this way.

It should virtually be that easy ... plenty of wildcats have been made by running reamers in short. In this case the reamer is a standard and the dies are cheap, with a little modification to the dies you have a short action thumper with brass that will run as hot as you like. You may also be able to use a shortened 458WinMag die if you prefer.
Cheers...

I found the reamer if you decide you want to build a 458x2, I will send it out for your build. It had done at least 3 chambers and they all shoot well.

That's very generous. I need to investigate a little further into smiths and how much this is going to set me back if I go forward

I'll probably start another thread looking for recommendations on gunsmiths, and what I'm potentially facing as far as costs

I built a 358 Grant for Indiana public land hunting. Its 300wsm shortened to 1.8" .
I'm loading 180gr ttsx with Benchmark at 3020fps on a 24" 12 twist Douglass.

Way too accurate for a hunting rifle.View attachment 1398742View attachment 1398743
Had the barrel nitrided.

Do you still have this cartridge and would you be willing to share starting load data or somewhere to find it. Just got a barrel chambered in this and cannot find any load info. Thank you for your time sir.

180gr TTSX .053" off the lands
, 58.3gr Benchmark,
BR2 primers,
Winchester 300wsm brass.
3011fps in a 25" Douglas barrel
Hornady dies.

I'm on the 8th firing on this brass and still going strong. 20240412_183041.jpg

I believe the Grant was a proprietary reamer; I had one built which was not technically a Grant but is similar or possibly even same dimensions. Therefore the information I am going to give you is directionary in nature ONLY. My load for this gun is 53.8gr H322 under a 225gr Accubond. I don't have the velocity in front of me but believe it was 3770fps or thereabouts, roughly on par with a Whelen AI. A real thumper for a short action cartridge.

I always wanted to build a Sambar but with this one in hand I could never justify it.

Brass forming is the real issue. I used the sizing die on 325 or 300 WSM brass and a good amount of lube, then slowly and carefully worked the shoulder back with many small pulls on the handle. Ruined about 15% of the brass with buckling in the process.

I don't shoot it much anymore, not legally required in years. But it is a real thumber and awfully effective on game.

The one I have is a 358 Jett. I appreciate you taking time to share this with me. God bless. Lucky for me I have 32# of H322 and an 8#er of benchmark.

I have a project on a short magnum Remington 700.
Case is an Ultra Mag cut off about at shoulder. 50 Alaskan reamer run in till the rim touched then a reamer I made to square the end to headspace on mouth.
Metal is done. Stock getting there.
Will take pictures.

19” barrel, blended brake. Chrome Moly, will be blued, Parkerized, Cerekote. Something.
Dummy round next to a 308 Winchester. Bullet is for an Alaskan so it’s short in front of cannelure.
No pic, stock is a McMillan HTG.

I think it’s 75 grains of ball powder to base of bullet.
Going to start with the fastest powder loads for the 50 Alaskan and work up stopping when still fun.

Well the 270 wsm is certainly popular around here. I don’t know what animal is going to walk away from a hit in the heart or lungs from a 140 gr AB at 2950 fps, haven’t seen one go more than a few yards spraying blood everywhere.
