Shooting Glasses Rx

Back when I shot irons for the AR service rifle, I was told to add +0.50 to the Rx to increase front site clarity.

Does this still hold true for PALMA with a 30" sight distance vs the 20"?

I have found either .62 or .75 works for me. The best way is take your rig to your eye doctors office and see. Now I just have my dr. Hold his test card at my front sight distance of 34 inches from my eye.

So first off… you need actual shooting glasses that put the center of the prescription in the direct line of sight when shooting the rifle, if we are talking prone then normal glasses will work, offhand you are looking through the upper corner of the lens and your prescription ain’t there…

Second, you + bump if your far sighted… - bump if near sighted.

If you have astigmatism it’ll stay the same.

I have multiple prescriptions depending on distance and lighting conditions and sometimes even if my eyes are getting tired from an all day match. Far sighted I find +.5 works to about 100, +.25 farther…. +.5 puts the target to blurry.

You’ll have to experiment. It’s your sight set up and your eyes.

Unfortunately, this is all true. I once bought a set of lenses in the various plus and minus denominations and was able to do the testing myself. Then I was able to use them to help others.

I am farsighted, my right eye Rx is +0.75. So if I understand you correctly, I would change that Rx to +1.25 or 1.00, and test it out.
just verifying I’m looking at the right direction. Not changing Rx to +.25 or +0.50, correct?

Your first number in your prescription is +0.75 correct? I’d try a +1.0 total to start out, your standard .75 distance with .25 bump. Your eyes aren’t that bad yet…. My shooting prescription is +3.25 - +4.00…. Seeing the front sight for me is hard…. If it gets clear the targets get very fuzzy… Welcome to old age. :)

Yes. The extra +.5 gives a focal length if two metres, so approximately double the sight radius. That should hit the hyperfocal distance of the foresight for most shooters where the foresight is clear and the target less indistinct. It's what I use in smallbore with a 24in barrel + 6in tube.

Oddly, when US service shooti and pops up, +.75 tends to be recommended.

Wait till you have Cataract surgery.
Went could not see Anything past 8" to seeing 600 yards Plus, and not see up close w/out Cheaters, A whole New World!

Still using a .50 Diopter over for my Shooting Eye.

I am farsighted, though age is catching up and I am at +1.00 for distance with a small astigmatism now @ 51. Hyperopia setting in on top of presbyopia.

I find for my Palma rifle at 600-1000 my distance Rx or another +.25 on top works most of the time. More and I lose the target. This is with a +0.5 lens, more lens and I lose target regardless. The Centra Bak4 lenses are tits by the way. Same holds true for smallbore but I can get away with more as the target image is so much better due to lack of atmosphere. For smallbore I use a 0.3 lens most of the time otherwise I tend to run out of iris diameter on ISSF targets.

Some folks like the Gehmann 530-0 iris / zero magnification correction combo but it is like $350 and some ppl say it is prone to breakage on the 308. I have two and they both live on friend’s rifles these days.

ETA - I am using Decot HyWyd glasses these days. I bought a pair with Plano lenses (zero correction) and then laid down and slung up and looked through the sights. Then had my wife mark my lens with a sharpie where my optical center is. She is an optician so she took my Plano lenses and sent them to one of her local labs and had new lenses cut with my Rx with my optical center in the correct location for my dominant (firing) eye.
