Shooting benches

Notice I said...."when I used a 4 leg"?????
I saw that. My reply wasn’t directed at you but for those who might be on the fence about 3 or 4 fixed legs. I suppose if someone wanted 4 fixed legs they could make one of them adjustable. That would make it easy to get any wobble out but still wouldn’t help with leveling.

Been using a 4 legged since 1985 with no issues. If the ground is really messed up, you are going to have trouble with a chair also, I use a drum stool, purchased at a pawn shop.

Also, you do not want to be able to push down on the table top with your thumb and watch the cross hair dance.

Best idea of the portable table & p/dogs ?

The added elevation

Stay away from ants..........snakes & other critters on the ground

Iffin your rancher leaves the hay wagon in the field........

All the better !

I saw this photo somewhere before. I started using the exact same barrel cooler. Spray a little water on it every now and then and you're good to go.

My "portable" bench was made with three sockets in the back so that it can be used as either a three or four leg bench. When it is set up as a four leg, one is adjustable, so that there is never any rocking. The legs are 1 1/2" schedule 40 and in four leg configuration it weighs 107 lb. The front legs angle out to the front and side and the rear legs to the back and side. The rear sockets are welded to a single plate.

Shooting stationary targets, there are some fine examples here for a DIY.
A pivoting bench is what I am after. I have one of the bulk made ones (cheap) it actually works pretty good. However the seat and top was made for some one about 5’1” or shorter. I find long sitting sessions of my legs and knees cramping. The seat and top could stand to be 12-18” higher in my book.

We used to build the bench straight into the trailer. We also built pop-up tops on cranks so we could stay in the shade.

CoyoteJakes.com sells aluminum bench kits with three legs and a center piece on the bottom of the pivot that also adjust to the ground. Thus, 4 grounding points.

Three legged benches are probably are great, but, with a three legged bench you are threading pipe into an "angled coupling." The "plate that the angled coupling is welded to is what 4"x4" or maybe 5"x5" square steel? The "moment arm that is created by a 31"+ long leg (pipe) is quite large. Thus the plate requires a thick top to fasten and hold the plate / base effectively.
Folding table legs distribute the force to three points that are spread out on the bench. Not to mention the folding arms help support weight from a top load.. Also no tools are needed for assembly.. Folding table legs could be modified as a three point contact but after 20 years on setting up on prairies I don't see the reason why..

The 3 leg pipe distribution angle is what makes that setup solid as far as I'm concerned. Push against each other. A thicker top is not needed....lighter to carry. Easier to set up to get level. I've used 4 leg also. Most are not angled. Less stability. Need a thicker top. I'll stick with the 3 pipe. No big deal...use what u want.

PS...also no need to break down 3 legged benches to move...load things in truck box, benches go in last upside-down.

Sent an email inquiry. Looks like a nice set up and fairly compact.
Forgot to ask, what is the height of the table top? I just hate sitting at the bench I have now for more than an hour, seat is to low as is the top.
