Shooting benches

I have a 100 yards on the farm where it’s safe to shoot. I have pistol targets on the right side out to about 45 yards and rifle targets on the left to 100 yards. I used to have a bench built from 2x6s but decided to build something useful for the occasional summer sprinkle of rain.4AD3A755-9B15-4175-A73D-129FC1CEA9DC.jpeg4BB3FB5E-2FAC-447A-AED4-0574F185A656.jpeg716B84E7-978B-462D-B110-A0245DC666C1.jpeg

These things are awesome. I have 3. Two here in AZ and I leave 1 in PA. We have shot deer, groundhogs, and prairie dogs off them. You can carry them in one hand.

Here are the brackets.

My bench looks very similar to yours, but I've got less pitch to my legs. That's a very stable looking setup. Pre-mfg brackets weren't available when I made my bench. I cut thick wedges out of a piece of oak and attached them to the bottom of the table at the correct angle. This allowed me to use readily available (threaded) pipe flanges. If you have expandable legs, it's easy to fashion a bracket on the bottom to hold them in place. They can then be used as a carry handle with the table closed up for transport.

Those look great and would provide a very stable platform. 3 legs better than 4.. Just thread the "pipe" legs into the brackets and tighten with pipe wrench or maybe drill a thru hole in each pipe leg and use a long screw driver or #4 rebar etc to tighten. Maybe have some magnets on bottom of bench to "stow" the tightening tool?

Portable table

Simple to make......especially if you know a welder buddy for leg brackets

Been using this one prob for 25 yrs.....kilt a million p/dogs over the top

Keep a spare in the gun room for cleaning & scope mounting etc

20-222 on table

Nettle, I have a few buddies that have the Caldwell you posted. A pretty good table for the cost. We added a larger top and a swivel seat with a backrest to them and it made it so much better.

These two are built from old Honda ATV shipping crates & 3/4" plywood:

Welded up the frames around 20 years ago, just replaced the plywood a year or two ago. I use spray rubberized undercoating on top of the frames to prevent the chromated copper arsenate in the wood from eating the steel.

I have NEVER tightened the legs on my 3 pipe bench except by hand. I use the KISS method as needed. Maybe I should be using a torque wrench on them???Dogs never noticed....

I shouldn't speak about things I have NO experience with.. I remember using benches with an outfitter that used pipe but if I recall correctly they were just fitted into a larger pipe and not threaded. Wobbly POS.. My mistake..

Maybe I’m getting weak but there have been times when I’ve had a hard time removing threaded pipe after hand tightening. I’ve also noticed sometimes a slight wobble in the joint after only hand tightening. So, I decided to drill a 1/4” hole in the pipe and use an adjustable spanner to tighten.

I have benches like Urbanrifleman, 4 legged version.

you could put a 350 lb Buffalo Heffer up there on that bench with her doing a lap dance, the bench would be stable.

I HATE benches were you move a tad and your cross hair dances all over the map, some of the benches in these pictured do just that!

I have made one like that. Drilled a hole in receiving pipe big enough to weld a 1/2 inch nut to on the outside, then use a 1/2 bolt through nut and hole to tighten leg up . Real solid this way.

If legs are not adjustable, how do you get 4 legs in firm contact with the ground?
Soil where we shoot ( WY and MT) is caliche and is soft. I use old folding table legs that I modified ( widened and extended). The feet are about 7/8" in diameter and can be pushed into the soil.
