Shipping guns

I have a question, as an Individual can you yourself ship the gun to an FFL dealer?

Or do you yourself have to take the gun or pistol to the FFL dealer to ship the gun to your buyers FFL?

yes for a rifle..i'm not sure about a pistol...to be sure with a pistol..i'd ship thru an ffl..there's to many diferent laws regarding pistols..and for the cost of the ffl ..it wouldn't be worth the risk to me

Make sure the FFL that you are shipping to will accept from a non-FFL BEFORE you ship to them. As a nonFFL you cannot ship handguns via USPS, only long guns. Keep in mind that sometimes its cheaper to ship thru an FFL that can ship USPS with a handgun than it is to ship direct thru UPS 2nd day air (UPS rule, not a law, btw).

UPS will ship hand guns, I know i shipped one about a mouth ago. You just have to ship it over night. Just my .02 cents worth, Hope this helps.

As an 07 Manufacturer FFL holder I can answer your first question as a yes. You can send your rifle or handgun directly to an FFL holder from your person. Long guns can be sent via USPS or private carrier (UPS or FedEx) according to BATF and USPS guidelines. Handguns must be sent from an individual to an FFL via private carriers only (NOT USPS) and they (UPS or FedEx) may require, depending on their policies, that it be sent next day unless you have another agreement with them as some manufacturers have arranged. They may also require that you take it to one of their terminals to send it as opposed to a "store" location.

The problem is that some FFL holders either don't understand the law or don't want to be inconvenienced by having an individual send them a gun instead of a fellow FFL holder, even though it is legal. But the bottom line is that is one of the reasons they have a license.

Another bit of confusion is that sometimes, although totally against BATF rules and regs, private shippers (UPS in particular) will try to require you to give them a copy of the receivers FFL. It is not only against regulations but illegal for them to keep FFL copies on file so do not get convinced by them that it is required as it is not.

Larry,

This was in the Daily Bulletin before, it's a BATFE Handbook that covers your shipping question on page 176.
