In the dozens of times I've sent stuff, I can only remember UPS asking to see the item itself -- NOT the FFL even -- once. And when I opened the case, which I had not locked for just such an occurrence, the UPS counter clerk said "Wow, I don't know what that is, but it sure looks awesome."

Are you shipping within your state? In new york we used to be able to ship direct with no ffl involvement.Check your state laws if this is the case.
Do Not ship ANYTHING thru a UPS store. My G/F shipped a package to her daughter for her B day and the ups store printed out a label and put the wrong address on it. The people kept it and wouldn't answer the door when ups came to get it back. It WAS insured and she never got any money back, and The REAL UPS says they are not affiliated with them, that the employees work for the store and NOT UPS. She was out $250.00
If you really want it to get there and be insured take it to a UPS Hub.
When I shiped the last rifle I built ( he sent me the components ) I shipped it as a custom stock and a barreled action thru UPS. It was dissasembled.

Long guns can be shipped USPS, FedEx or UPS. I prefer USPS for long guns, since it's cheaper and quicker in most cases. No FFL is required on the senders/sellers side when shipping a handgun or a long gun out of state, but the firearm "must" be shipped to an FFL unless you are shipping the firearm to yourself in another state. Since handguns "must" be shipped Overnight UPS or FedEx it is almost always cheaper to just pay your local FFL to do the transfer and ship it for you, since a FFL can legally ship handguns via USPS Priority Mail.

By the way, even gun parts if they include the receiver, are considered a firearm and are supposed to be shipped just like a complete firearm when being sold. Disassembling a firearm does not allow you to legally bypass the shipping requirements for a long gun or a hand gun.

Yes, they will ship long guns. Last time I had one shipped to me via USPS the clerk told the seller they didn't know if they could accept a firearm. After checking they did accept the long gun for shipment. Gunbroker has all the shipping laws listed on their site and they keep it pretty current, not that anything has changed recently.
Here's most of the shipping requirements pertaining to an unlicensed seller/shipper:
Shipment by Unlicensed Persons
Any shipper who does not have a Federal Firearms License (FFL) is considered to be an 'unlicensed person'. This section contains information on how unlicensed persons can ship firearms. If you have an FFL, please skip to the next section for shipping suggestions.
The most important thing to know is that you must only ship guns to a licensed dealer. If the buyer is not a licensed dealer, he will have to make arrangements to ship the item to a dealer in his state.
Before you ship a gun, the buyer must fax or mail you a copy of the dealer's signed FFL license. You can only ship the gun to the address on the license. You must inform the carrier that the package contains a firearm. Of course, the firearm cannot be shipped loaded; ammunition may not be shipped in the same box. You should take the copy of the signed FFL with you when you take the item to be shipped in case the shipper wishes to see it.
Notes on specific shippers:
Confirm: Ammunition must be shipped as hazardous goods via Ground in compliance with ORM-D.
•US Mail: An unlicensed person can ship a rifle or shotgun by US Mail. Unlicensed persons cannot ship a handgun by US Mail. Postal regulations allow the Post Office to open your package for inspection. Ammunition cannot be shipped by US Mail. You can search the US Post Office Postal Explorer site for specific USPS regulations regarding firearms and ammunition.
•FedEx Express: FedEx will only ship firearms via their Priority Overnight service. Ammunition must be shipped as hazardous goods via Ground in compliance with "Limited Quantity".
•FedEx Ground: FedEx Ground will transport and deliver firearms (excluding handguns) as defined by the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, between areas served in the U.S. Ammunition must be shipped as hazardous goods via Ground in compliance with "Limited Quantity". FedEx Ground will accept shipments of ammunition. Special labeling is required.
•UPS: UPS will accept handgun shipments by Next Day Air only. Rifles and shotguns can be shipped by UPS ground service. UPS will accept shipments of ammunition. Special labeling is required.
• Most other shippers will no longer accept firearm shipments. Airborne and Roadway have specifically prohibited firearm shipments.

Hey. Everyone make sure you are standing at the Post Office or the UPS Hubs. NONE of the franchised branches will take firearms. As stated the UPS shipping stores are NOT UPS. They are simply franchised shops with the UPS name on the door. We have these mini mall USPS offices in Florida, that are NOT Post Office employees. So be sure that when you hear something from these people you realize where you are at the time. Rant over... BTW, if shipping back to the manufacturer for repair, the FFL requirement is eliminated as I recall. I may be wrong on that, but Remington took and shipped a shotgun to me at my house via UPS once.

If this is true, then you need to understand when and how (and even IF) to disclose what's in a package. In other words, when you're dealing with stupidity, then don't make it worse. If you described the contents of the package as a "rifle rest", then you're part of the problem.
Contents: "machine parts", or "vise", or "crock pot holder". Why add fuel to the flames of stupidity? They burn higher and higher because of liberals and their idiotic agenda. Don't play the game by their rules.
