Setting up your scope

For hunting I use Swaro scopes. They have an optical design that makes the eye box pretty much the same on high or low mag. But then I only use 10x max and dont shoot at non-varmints past 3-400yds because there is nearly always wind or multiple winds.

James has the best instructional video I have seen on how to set up and shoot 'square' so you can see your hits. I have sent the link to many friends .

James has the best shooting house I have ever seen.

If you dont have a pic rail and those magic wedges then yes it is a chore to get your scope + scope bubble aligned to your rifle using wheeler kit and plumb bob!

I have been shooting critters for close 70 yrs. Never once was thinking about the eyebox when squeezing the trigger. The amount over over hyped BS now days is mind boggling. Much more important than most discussions about hunting scopes is how the rifle fits you with your hunting clothes, vests, jackets, long johns, and related items installed.

The eye box issue becomes real when shooting in last light dawn or dusk. I have done field testing with Leup VX5 2-10x42 vs Swaro Z3 3-10x42 and the diff is literally night and day. Washout with the Leup was severe. None with the Swaro. Eye box is also left to right as well as forward n rearward. Same price scopes.

I will double down.

Eyebox is super important. On a varmint gun its causes fatigue after 12 hrs on the dog town using high magnification. On a walking gun a big eyebox allows instant full view when a jack rabbit runs out at your feet or when you are in an awkward position and can't get your eye into the perfect spot without straining. Im seriously into shotguns too, so i know gun fit and i practice mounting my rifles and shotguns with thousands of repetitions over many years. Even then , sometimes in the field with my feet tangled in brush or a steep slope my eye is not always instantly in the sweet spot. Big eyebox like on a 1x scope allows more room for error. Im sure you are just way better at this than everyone else though....

I have shot thousands of runs in my lifetime at running deer matches, maybe that's why I have learned to just do what's required. I have stood for hours shooting out the front window in the dark at a lighter doorbell button 75 yards down the road on a neighbor's house cycling a bolt action for 3 shots with dummy rounds. Never once moaned or cried about it, maybe no smart enough. One running deer match had a 5.5 second window for 3 shots, no time to worry about the eye box. Yes I am a deer hunter with stocks adjusted to fit me dressed for cold conditions. I am short. Its amazing how many very tall guys I hear complaint at the range before deer season in the cold I have handed my rifle to and the say, wow I can see through your scope so easy. Tell them to get their stock CUT to fit them in the coats they hunting , they recoil in horror. Often hear, I would never do that. Of course minutes early they were telling how the big one got away because they would not find it running in their scope.
