Has anyone ever had a seller receive your money order and then shred it by accident. Then he says send me a check so I would pay twice and I said no not yet. Went to the post office and the postmaster was out so now I have to go back later again and explain what this old fella did to it. The post office wants the shred back but I said what if you guys lost it and it was never seen again. So I may be out 87.00. I don't want to rip off the old guy but I didn't shred it . I don't know how this will play out but curious if anyone got their money refunded in a goofy situation like this? Sorry about the rant but am very upset how this deal has gone sour so to speak.

I agree that it is his issue to deal with. He received payment. Out of your hands what happens to it at that point. I understand trying to help him out but when push comes to shove.....

How bad was it shredded? If you could at least get back some of it, it would help with getting a refund from the post office. Still, it is going to cost 5.95 to file a lost m.o. form. Looking at it another way, if I got a twenty dollar bill in an envelope for something I sold and I ran it through the shredder, I just lost twenty bucks, not the buyer. I would be obligated to send whatever was purchased and eat the twenty. My mistake is not the buyer's problem. Hopefully you can work something out but the seller should complete the sale and ship when payment is received.

Jon,
With a PO money order don't you as the buyer of that money order get a copy? If so, one would think the PO could track to see if it was cashed. Might take them forever.

I was under the impression you could put a stop payment on the MO (I'm sure there is a fee) and get your money back or having a duplicate/replacement re-issued. I would venture to say you would have to help him out.

Things happen I'd work with the guy...I know I've made mistakes in the past.

to be honest I don't see how it is your problem. You shipped the money order,he got it and that's all there is to it. Don't send him any more money. He is trying to make it your problem which it is not.

I got the answer. They charge 5.95 to send you a check in refund and it takes 2 months to get it back.

Tell him to send you what you bought, plus $5.95 to file the lost MO form. Tell him you will sign the check over to him and mail it when you receive it. Problem is on his end. If I sold you something and accidentally shredded, lost, or otherwise destroyed your payment, you'd never even know about it.

I am in the camp with everyone who says the seller should go ahead and ship you the item. You lived up to your end of the deal. But you are definitely doing the right thing by trying to help him get the $$.

It's not your problem, it's his. You sent the money....... it's his fault he shredded it. You are going out of your way trying to help him and you need to explain that to him. Since he admitted to receiving the MO, he is obligated to send you the item. Then HE can prove that he shredded the MO to the post office. You can be polite and help him sort it out but in no way should it become your headache.

I have bought a lot of stuff with Postal money orders and I've never heard of that. just my opinion is that he should ship the item you paid for and give the post office the contents of his shreader in good faith. You can provide proof that you purchased the money order. That should be all you are required to do.

Jon, I smell a rat. Hope I'm wrong. The problem is on his end. He needs to ship the item and pay any/all excess fees caused by his mistake.

So if none of this had happened and he had sent you the item and when you received it, you "accidently" drove over it and ruined it. Would anyone reasonably expect him to send you another one? I think not.

Sorry if it quacks like a scam and walks like a scam, it's a scam.

If this turns out the way it looks like it will, please let us know who to be cautious with.

Thanks and good luck.
