Selling components at market prices

Last time around I would stop any place that might powder, primers or bullets and if they had something I might be able to use, I would buy it. A pound or two of powder, some primers what ever.
I was called a hoarder, denying others the opportunity.

When that cycle broke, I was buying primers for 2-2.5 cents without Haz-Mat because 5 years of back orders all showed up at once, possibly once in a lifetime prices.
I was a hoarder. or a prepper or maybe just plain stupid for buying the amounts I did.

I got caught short this summer and did not buy the cases of 22LR I normally do, soon enough. Paid 1.5X normal.
I was part of the problem by paying gougers.

Now because I won't sell for the prices that some of these same name callers know I paid, I had to join Ancestery dot com to find my heritage, join a yoga class to be able to do some of the things I've been told to do, I even tried to turn myself in at immigration because I was told I'm un-American.

Gave 1000 primers to someone who "really needed them". Came back a few weeks later asking if I could spare some more. Earned a new nickname that afternoon. Funny thing was, I had already heard from someone else's wife, who I offered to help, that they were fine. Found 500 primers at just a bit more than pre-panic price. Not many secrets in a small town.

Doesn't seem to matter which end of the deal I'm on, to half of everyone else, I'm the stupid a..hole.

Sometimes the shooting community truly are their own worst enemy.
You know there is a flip side to this and was reminded of it within minutes after posting the above.

A few months ago, I sent some bullets out to someone and he asked what I wanted in return. Told him I would send some cash to make the difference up, and send me one of those things you make.

He told me to keep the cash, and sent two.

How easy we forget the kindness, and dwell on the garbage in times like this

I wouldn’t expect gas stations to sell gas based on what they paid. They should price it based on what the expected replacement cost is going to be. The same gas they have in the ground might change prices several times and that’s just fine.
Not only the replacement cost, but depending on how the political climate goes, there may be no replacements. A grim possibility, but there's a whole new crop of rabid anti-gunners out there now.

Primers will be the last item scrutinized though; organized tournaments especially like those of single shot rifles with their hand loads, are the “golden child” of the shooting world - like .22 biathlon rifles for the Olympics. It’s great to support the NRA but we can really mainstream acceptance of the many facets of our sports and collections by widely putting as many as possible of them to use in public matches - just like 50 BMG’s and .338’s have had to swim against the current even in gun range circles. ^^

Very timely thread. Just this morning we pulled out 2,000 rounds of 9mm and 2,500 rounds of SS109. Stuff that I NEVER shoot. I don’t know why I have it, really. I suspect I bought it after the last scare. If it weren’t for the stigma, I’d sell it in a heartbeat for inflated/ yet somewhat reasonable prices. Prices that people would be happy to pay.

What if I sold it and turned it into a 300NMI barrel for my 338LM that I NEVER shoot because local ranges won’t allow it... Does that make me an opportunistic A$$ if I keep the proceeds within the community, so to speak?
Nope

Anyone who has a problem buying a product that was marked up by someone had better be buying factory direct. That pound of powder or box of bullets has passed through at least three hands before it lands in yours. The price was marked up at each stage of the distribution/logistics process.

Now what do you define as an outrageous markup? 100 percent? The ingredients that go into that 30 (now 40) dollar pound of powder probably cost 5 cents. I buy bullets for 20 cents a piece that will cost me 1 dollar a piece to replace and you want me to sell them to you for 20 cents? Dream on teenage queen.

Just looked at what i have in 9mm, boxes say $5.95 on them, can't imagine 50 cents a round. Lucky i prepared a long time ago. Glad i don't have to buy ammo in these times. Suppose I could say it was a decent investment.

I have to chuckle at the comments about what the market will bear. Should a chamber job go to 600 and glass bedding go to 300?

There is a difference between making a buck and screwing people. 500 bucks for 8lbs of powder is screwing people. Thats why they world is the way it is. 90% of the people are worried about the almighty dollar and will do anything to get it.

I bet there would be some real heartburn if rifle builders raised their price to what the market would bear. Maybe we should just raise it to auto shop rates they dont have to deal with the ATF bs we do.

I don't get your logic when you say 500 bucks for 8 pounds is screwing people? The seller can sell for whatever price he wants. The seller is not going to put a gun to anyone's head to buy it. If some idiot wants to pay 500 or even 1000 for 8 pounds what business is it of yours? I'm just tired of all the whiners out there who are crying because they are running out of stuff. IT'S NOBODY'S FAULT BUT YOURS! Haven't you learned anything by now. When Clinton got in it was the same way. After Obama got in there the 1st time is was that way for about 7 months. When he got in the 2nd time it was a repeat performance. When are some of you out there going to learn? I'll tell you when, when your on the wrong side of the dirt that's when.

Sorry. No one is being screwed unless they CHOOSE to buy something at an outrageous price. In that event they really screwed themselves, because they didn't plan ahead, and then either paid the outrageous price, or did without. Neither of those outcomes is my fault, or my concern. Claiming otherwise is just typical victimhood BS. The only thing most people are victims of is a lack of foresight. If no one buys these items that are priced so extremely high, then the sellers will have to keep them and eat the costs.

There's an issue with that. You're not the only person with a lathe. They ARE the only people making primers and such. If I don't like your prices, I'll find someone else. I'm SOL with primers from one of 2 manufacturers.

If Federal/Vista charged that, yes it's screwing people. The folks charging these prices are opportunists. I don't like it, but that's how it is right now.

FYI, a buddy sent me something on FB from powdervalley about Vista increasing prices across the board. What fun.
