Seeking First Hand Knowledge Eastern OK and Western AR

Papacharlie -

Howdy !

After my first 55yr on the farm in NE Indiana, first lived/worked in Wichita Falls. TX..... then took a job up in Tulsa. Have lived NE of Broken Arrow ( which is immediately East of Tulsa ) since early 2010.

Some gun stores here have done an incredible job of providing powder, bullets; ammo.

Tulsa sports the largest gun show in the US 2X a year. 7 acres under roof.
There are 10,000+ guns in the JM Davis museum up in Owasso, about 17mi North of Tulsa

Oklahoma is " open carry " legal, and you can buy a lifetime handgun permit if you want.

You can get a lot of house for the $$$ here.
Broken Arrow's growth just blew up after Bass Pro Shop built on the NW end of town.
I myself find little need to actually go in to Tulsa, other than for the gun shops / reloading stores. Broken Arrow is the 3th largest " city " in Oklahoma, edged out for #3 by Norman... which has a large university that inflates population numbers a bit.

WX here superb ! The last trip we made back to Indiana 2wk ago, it made it to 78* here the day before we left, and up to 76* the day we departed. It was 24*F back in Indiana the morning we headed back to OK, and it was 76* @ sunset when we got home.

We don't often have snow in WInter. We had none this past winter.
I'm still watering flowers in the beds, and it's mid Dec.

We are considering perhaps moving closer to Indianapolis now that I am retired.
We have grandkids, oldest Son and daughter-in-law there.
But for us, the moderate weather here is so phenominal !

In the past 11y yrs we have had funnel clouds seen within 1mi of our house, and tornado damage within 4mi. Had the same things happen back in NE Indiana. Was 2 cars back when a semi was blown off the road by a rain wrapped tornado 10:30pm Christmas Eve just a couple year ago..... and that was just outside of Anderson, IN on I-69. But hey.... we're still hangin' !

It's pretty cool beans, out here in the " Indian Nations ".

With regards,

Looking for some input from those who live in the Eastern Oklahoma, Tulsa corner and Western Arkansas , Fort Smith and around. For the last 35 years we had hoped to retire to the Oregon Coast, where I grew up, but the political climate has impacted that dream. Recently retired (11/30) and looking for a place to call home. Wanting to have some acreage, medium size home, shop, small town atmosphere, safe environment, good medical, not too hot or cold, no seasonal excessive storms and not too far from F-Class competitions (Medium and Long Range).

Having never been to this part of the country, I only know what we hear on the news and weather channel and of course what hear on the internet. Not the same or as reliable as being/living there.

Would appreciate any information from those who have first hand experience. If you like PM me and we can talk.

Thanks very much for your input.

Papacharlie,
I live just north of Tulsa, Most anything you need is within a 20min drive if not in the town closest to you. It is a nice region to live in. Weather is fairly good year round. August gets a little warm and January can get a little cold. A few tornados a year, a little snow that usually lasts 1-3 days, and an ice storm every few years kinda sums up the weather.
There are deals on property to be had. Prices vary depending on which county you look at around the Tulsa area. Like others said Tulsa is becoming a cesspool and it does filter into the surrounding towns to different degrees.

My wife and I have been looking at OK for retirement for a couple of years now. We've kinda settled on the area between the two blue lines.....far enough west to not be as humid.....and far enough east not to be too windy. The family farm LLC has started moving assets from NE to OK. We sold my great aunt's and grandparent's homes in NE and bought hay pasture outside of Panama OK. Beautiful area and tons of deer and hogs.

i have lived in southwest OK for 66 years right in the blue zone you show. wind will be somewhat of an issue in all of that area. more important is it is also a somewhat dry area compared to the eastern part of the state. the plus side is you cannot find a more economical place to live. utilities are cheap, property is reasonable, goods and services are very reasonable. once you get used to the heat of june-august you will really enjoy the lack of winter. was 70's all week here but wind was 15-20. if you use the eastern line on your chart and use the "O" as a pivot, rotate the eastern line until it touches the western line at the bottom of the map. now move your western line parallel to the new line about 70-100 miles wide. then you have the prime cut of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri with some great parts of arkansas and texas
just my two cents from a little bit of experience

I lived in Fayetteville/Springdale area in Northwest Arkansas for approx 4 years. If I remember correctly, we made the drive over to Tulsa many times. If I remember correctly from Fayetteville/Springdale was approximately 1 hour,

That region of the Northwest Arkansas I’m the counties of Washington and Benton may be one of the best places to live in the US.

That area is Right in the heart of the Ozark Mountains. Lots to do in all the the towns - Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, and Bentonville (Walmart Corporate headquarters in Bentonville).

There are many well known and large corporate entities in that region (Tyson Foods, JB Hunt, Daisy Air Rifle, others). The local economy is great there and one of the top regions of the US.

Most of all to me that region of the country has many wonderful outdoor activities with a myriad of choices to choose from. I believe that area is in the top 5 fastest growing regions. There are no slums and Avery safe place to live with low crime rates.

It has a great climate being situated in the Ozarks and in close proximity to the Midwestern states of Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas, I try is basically a Midwestern climate but with mountains. I was raised in Mississippi and surprised by the climate with four distinct seasons unlike most of the Southeastern US. Mississippi I feel like we really only have one season - Summer and damn hot most of the year.

I would recommend anyone to move there. Very nice place to live.

If I drew a 75 mile circle around Broken Bow, Ok, are there good medical facilities in that area? I know that there use to not be much for medical in most rural areas, but in the last 20 years, a lot of the big players in medicine have started to branch out further from the metropolitan areas.

Thanks everyone for the input.

What is Oklahoma's and Arkansas's political stance on the vaccination mandates by the Feds? To my knowledge, Florida is the only state that is telling the Fed's NO!

Well a judge blocked the only mandate we had in arkansas for health care workers. We have very low numbers in the state and every once in a while youll see a mask but not often. Up in the blue NW corner im sure youll see some but not in the rest of the state.

Fayetteville’s been purpleish-blue for a while due to the university. Has the whole area swung left now? Been a few years since I lived in NWA.
Heres the way it is. You can see the blue NW (and its seriously blue like austin) then you can see the delta and the hwy65 corridor which vote for a check. If you laid an unemployment map over the state youd see a direct correlation on there except nwa. FE0FA076-72E8-45C6-9CCF-81F736581BB5.png

I misunderstood. Thought you meant all of NWA went blue. Yeah, Fayettenam’s university population has been a poop stain for a while now. Of course the other blue areas have been as you describe for pretty much always - and that’ll likely never change.

OP:
I first lived in northwest Arkansas in 1987. It had a cozy small town feel, plenty of amenities and a great “vibe”. Growth was, and remains, explosive. By the time I left in 2007 the area had become much more corporate. Wal Mart, JB Hunt and Tyson rule the roost. Crime and gangs were on the rise and cost of living was no longer a bargain. Traffic flow had become a giant bottleneck. Had enough, sold my house and waved goodbye. Compared to many parts of the country, NWA is still a great place to be but there’s better options today. My apologies to any I’ve offended.

I moved to the lakes area of north central Arkansas 30 some years ago. The roads are crooked so it takes a little longer to get places but privacy has its price. Costs are low. The weather is tolerable. There are 4 seasons and the area is beautiful in its own way each season. It is 100 miles or 2 hours for me to get to any of the major cities in all 4 directions, Springfield, MO, Conway, Springdale, Jonesboro.

Jay Lynn Gore has 200-300 acres east of Talihina, Ok close to the Arkansas border. It is very beautifull there. Elk, white tail, and bear. I'll check with him and see what his plans for it. I think he has had it 30+ years.
