Seeking Info on Rem 40X from 1990s

Back in the mid 1990s I received a Remington 40X in a trade. It was set up as a Palma rifle, single shot, 27" 308 barrel with a bloop tube and front sight, Warner(?) rear sight, McMillan Prone(?) stock with rail and adjustable hand stop. One very knowledgeable person I know stated that those receivers with the screw holes on the side for sights were very good, and I took it that it came from the factory that way. Another old timer I know said that those screw holes were added later.

I originally thought that the rifle was as purchased from the factory, and I am curious to hear from those who were around at that time and knew what was coming from Remington.

Thanks,
Richard

I believe some of the older 40x came drilled and tapped for receiver sights. 2 of mine are that way. Very good-not any better than the others.

The Rangemaster version of the 40X and 40XB with the 27 1/4" barrel were all D&T on the side for receiver mounted sights as far as I know. Even the blued 40XBR actions I have owned were also. Note that while Remington quit this practice for the 700 model some years ago, they continued it on the 40X rifles that were not configured as BR rifles. As a side note, I bought about a dozen of the stainless 700 single shot actions that were sold a few years ago and all but one of them were D&T on the side also. This made me wonder if they were originally manufactured to be used on 40X rifles, but were marked and sold as 700 actions to raise funds. Remington was hard up for cash flow during that time period.

My Remington 40-XB made in 1970 has two side receiver screw hole with filler screw in them and it came from the factory that way.

Thanks for the responses. I had a complete rifle offered in 6BR with this action and decided it was worth more to me than what others wanted to pay for it, so I'll keep it and build something else later. It does have some sentimental value to me as being my first bolt gun.

So the McMillan stock etc was all aftermarket then, correct?

Thanks,
Richard

I never knew of a 40X coming out of the factory with a McMillan prone stock, but doesn't mean it didn't happen. Remington did contract with McMillan on some BR and the KS Rangemaster type stocks, which were cataloged and sold in some volume.

One of my 700 actions has sight mount holes on the side. I have no clue if factory or not, but knowing the history of the receiver I suspect it to be factory.
