Scouting Trip

Mike in Oregon

Gold $$ Contributor
Me and the wife are planning to take our 5th wheel and go to an old stumping ground in September for a week or so. This will be the first time back since I got out of varmint hunting 20+ years ago. The plan is to go to the different properties to see if I still have permission to hunt and to establish other contacts. I plan to sling a ton of made-up cards around to local independent stores and try to get the word out also. State police also have an office there. I will check-in, shoot the breeze and get a feel with them. He is some pics of the past.

If sage rat shooting is on the agenda, call around and find out who's using the poison cabbage. It'll save you fuel and time, as all fields treated with the stuff will be devoid of squirrels. Seen it myself, much to my chagrin.

Good for the ranchers/farmers, very bad for us.

What percentage of the alfalfa farmers are using poison cabbage Rick? Ballpark me! And no, not ratting. Just getting away and thought we would checkout Lakeview (I'll be doing a lot of door knocking). We'll be staying at Junipers RV Park. Supposed to pretty nice.

If I had to guess from what we've seen in the past ten years since the stuff became available, somewhere around 60% use the crap to rid their fields of squirrels. So with the poison and all the "outfitters" grabbing up prime ranches and shutting out all us locals who've shot these places since the mid 70's, it has really put a damper on the glorious rat shooting we enjoyed for the past 50 years.

I hope you and your wife have a nice outing to Lakeview at the Juniper RV Park, which as you mention is a nice place to relax. If you poke about enough, you'll come up with at least one or two places for ratting that don't use the hated (by us) poison rat killer. Best of luck in that regard.
