2019 Varmint Trip

I’m in the process of planning my 2019 varmint hunting trip. I usually try to combine some coyote calling with a couple days of prairie dog shooting. I had great fun in New Mexico and Colorado the last couple of years.

My wife usually sets home during my trips out west but this year she is wanting to do some sight seeing in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. If I do this trip with the wife, we will probably bring the travel trailer and set up a base somewhere around Flagstaff. We would rent her a car to use on the days I’m out hunting and possibly even fly her Mom out to sight see with her.

I was hoping that someone might have advice about shooting opportunities in the area. I would be open to using an outfitter or freelance opportunities.

Sage Rat shooting in Oregon is also high on my list. I would book this through an outfitter and fly out with a couple of guns.

I’ve also though about visiting Montana although I have not researched shooting opportunities there at all.

Be aware in Oregon you will need a hunting license to shoot sage rats, if your interested I can give you a good outfitter on the montana S.D border

Thanks for the heads up on the hunting licenses. I don’t mind paying up but I sure don’t want to break any laws.

Please feel free to pm me info Montana/ SD Outfitter. I’m not ruling anything out at this point. There’s always the chance that I can slip in two trips this year. It’s happened before..... lol

Biddle, MT has some big P-dog towns. Contact the BLM office in Miles City for a List of Ranchers who will let you blast them on their property. Biddle is in the S. E. corner of Montana just North of the Wy border.

Thanks!! I’ll check it out.

I haven't shot PD's here at this ranch for half a decade but it could be an option. I felt the PD's were over hunted after the season was open for a few weeks.

There's tons of PD's in Flagstaff, most right off the rural roads on the locals 2.5 acre lots, lol. They tend to get mad when you shoot at their little PD pets. I drive by wishing.

Seligman AZ area is where there are decent concentrations as far as I know.

We've unfortunately had droughts and plagues that greatly reduced the PD numbers, they were numerous when I was young around Flagstaff.

This literally happened, about 20 years ago a friend and I stumbled upon a huge town near the Grand Canyon. We had a blast and shot many. The very next spring in April we left work on Friday afternoon all loaded up to camp at that same spot. Only to discover the PD's were gone, all of them??!!

I found a remote town about 10 years ago. I shot half of them and felt bad there were so few so never went back.

Good luck on your journeys.
