Scoping Savage -- Ring Mount Challenge

A friend of mine brought in a new savage youth model 243 Win and wanted me to mount the scope and zero it. Gun came with mini picatinnys front and back. There is only one place to mount the rings. Problem is...they are too far apart to mount the scope. I figured to get him out of a jam...season starts this weekend...... I would lend him my old 3.5-10-x50 VX III for the season. This scope would not fit either. Turning the basses around would make matters worse. Ended up changing out the rings to 30 mm and installed one of my 8.5 - 25 LRT scopes.

Seems to me the only answers are a full picatinny rail or a bigger scope.

What am I missing

Sometimes the holes favor one end. If they do, swap them around.
I have a set of Burris singles that can be swapped. Note....won't work
if MOA changes are built into them.

A full rail is the best option to insure proper eye relief. But I’m surprised with it being a 243 short action that the scope tube was too short. Even the factory package deals with cheap Bushnells fit.

What kind of rings were you using? I could see a thick set of rings doing this maybe.

Like Fuj, for 2pc bases I have sets of either Burris or Warne steel bases. The slot on the Warne favors one end and allows a little more mounting options.

I shoot a number of Sav short actions and for many years used Weaver one piece bases and would file new slots in them where needed. Now I've gone to EGW, I like my scopes low so sometimes I have to file off the rear two lobes so I can clear the ocular housing and move the scopes forward.

The old scopes were nice and long and mounting was easy, then the compact hunting scopes and short action lightweight rifles of the ‘80s came along and we became large consumers of offset rings and dreamed of more base options. We would have loved the full length extended pic bases.

Maximizing eye relief with proper scope placement is so important I cringe when any scope looks too far back due to ring fit. Especially with a kids rifle where they may not have any muscle memory of proper technique and their heads are moving forward and back, left to right getting used to scopes. Combine that with many scopes today having short eye relief and it’s a good thing smaller calibers are all the rage. Lol

Hopefully you get to see the kid and how he holds the rifle so it’s not too far forward or back.

I like to reduce the number of screws, to reduce chance of issues. I’ve been happy with the DNZ game reaper one piece mounts on my savage 220s. They provide a nice low mount and plenty of room to adjust eye relief.

The DNZ's are quite good, and I have used them in both 30 and
34mm, however, I ran into a problem with them when going to
thicker diameter barrels and scopes. They were not tall enough
even in the high mount models. Mine are both 20 MOA so that
made barrel clearance worse.

That's the nice thing about the EGW bases. They are kinda tall.
For up through heavy Varmint contour i use low rings.
Even with the Sightron SIII 10-50X60 and 20 MOA base, i still have clearance at the barrel.

The EGW Keystone line of rings is solidly built too!!
At $69 for the base & $69 for the rings they are hard to beat price wise, especially for the quality!
And buy base & rings at same time you get 10% off.

Very common problem with the newer scopes now a days. Been selling guns at retail stores for about 12 years now and have had customers bring in there older hunting guns and want a newer scope. About 40% of the time the scope mounts are to far apart for the newer compact scopes. and either you can't mount it due to the front bell and rear magnification ring being to close or you can mount it and get no eye relief adjustments.

This is also common on new guns too, especially long action guns.

Only solution is a 1 piece rail.
