Scope Recommendation

Looking for some thoughts on a scope for my Rock River X-Series X-1 rifle in 223/556. I will be using this rifle for bench rest work out to 500 yards. Would like to budget something in the $350-$400 range. Would prefer 1/4 MOA value however 1/8th minute would work. Open to 1” or 30mm tube and magnification range from 20x to 30x. Right now I’m looking at a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6x24 with 30mm tube that I can get for $250 or so. With a military discount they now have their products with a 50% off sale. All thoughts appreciated!

Thanks

spend as much on the scope as you did on the rifle.
skip 1inch and look at quality 30mm
next you say bench out of a factory rifle...
what accuracy are you expecting.
what twist what bullet
diamondback is a low level vortex scope
buy once cry once

I appreciate your comment. Just returned from the “Balloon Blast” shoot in Kansas where our targets were 3 to 4 inch balloons from 100 to 500 yards. They have a class just for AR’s and my friend won 2nd place with a bone stock Rock River and a Sightron 4x20 scope. My AR shoots well enough however my little Nikon 3x9 won’t do the job. I don’t want to put a bunch of money in the scope however I need more magnification plus decent glass not high end Nightforce quality.

Thanks

first, all makers except valdada march and nightforce, have different levels of quality and pricing.
second a cheap scope is just that cheap. power is nothing if it is not repeatable and the picture clear
go look at the scopes for sale used here
go look at "shooters corner"
maybe a sightron but you still need to spend money sorry its just the facts of life
you are gonna want fine adjustments at 500 yards and a 4" target
rock river builds some good rifles,,,but notice their 3/4" accuracy means almost 4" at 500

I have Nikon M-223 4-16X42 on an older Colt CAR, 24" 1X9" barrel. It shoots 50gr VMAX extremely well and the scope works well out to 600 yds. As you likely know, Nikon is no longer in the scope business, but you still may be able to find some "new, old-stock" or a good used one. The price point was right about where you wanted to be. The glass is not as good as my Nightforce, Sightron SIII ED's or Vortex GE, but adequate for shooting balloons :)

Arken. I just picked up a 6x24 Gen II with rings for $371 I am going to pick up a 4x16 and they are less. I have been very impressed so far for the money. Very comparable to my Vortex Strike Eagle for less money.

500YD Benchrest scope on a budget?
36x Weaver T36 or Sightron 36?
SWFA 20x?
Older 8-32 - Burris/Bushnell/etc?

I have looked through the vortex diamondback at various distances. To me the glass sucks. Im glad my friend bought it first and i had a chance to look through it. I have 4 sightron S-tacs in 4x20 and have taken out to 1,000 and i was impressed. Thats why i have 4 of them now

This is what Sightron has on sale for May/ June. S-Tac is in the sale.

Lots of good aodvice here but, if your stuck on 300 to 400 dollars I must add this to the conversation. I have a 6x24x 56 Hawke on a Springer air gun, perhaps the worst scope killer there is. 5000 shots since January. Eighth minute clicks, etched reticle, 30 mm tube, illuminated, has held point of aim perfectly along with repeatability. Lifetime warranty. I bought it new for 397.00. I now own 3 Hawkes, NOT one issue over 5 years. That being said I also would advise, add a couple hundred and find a used Sightron, Leupold, of Vortex. But the Hawke line is with checking out, look on Dvor.com.

The Sightron S-Tac 4-20 is my recommendation. I have two and they are great scopes priced very reasonably. Lance at Buchanan Accuracy is a sponsor here and a good source for Sightron products.

Good shootin' -Al
The Sightron 4 x 20 is a great bargain price wise. A friend has one. Not a thing wrong with the scope especially in this price range. Very nice!

I am in total agreement with Mr. Nyhus and Paul regarding the Sightron S-Tac 4-20 scope. I just bought one and can't believe the edge to edge clarity of this scope. For what it's worth I think it is a great looking scope and for me cosmetics are almost as important to me as performance and this scope delivers in both categories. And of course there is always the great customer service from Sightron.

but have you used it at 500 yards ???

That's a good point and I have not. But I will look at longer distance, that has been a thought. I have only shot as far as 50 yds with it. I did run into a guy who told me he has 3 Hawke svopes on deer rifles and is happy with them, might depend on both the use and the user. My point though was there are other options worth exploring.
