scope out of adjustment .. help

yo, back up, you need 20minutes in your bases or rings. But you have to tilt that scope front down. for long range. Db

The op doesn't need 20moa bases, he shoots short range, he has other issues, he knows the scope needs tilted down to bring it up but he wants it to function correctly and it isn't so he is sending the defective rifle back to Savage for repair.

I don't think you're wrong at all. Maybe cut a little slack and say it ought to print within 6" at 100, I don't think that would be unreasonable. Take it from me, don't spend much more time driving yourself nuts on this gun. There's something wrong with it. Some other guy just posted the other day that his Savage was shooting ultra-low as well. They are doing something wrong somewhere at the factory. Maybe the action isn't flat, maybe the threads aren't cut true, banana bore, recoil lug, something. Savage tried to give me the run around on mine. Said it was "test fired" at the factory. Yeah, they test fired it right into the floor of the shooting tunnel! They did take care of me but I had to be firm and included a detailed letter with the gun when I sent it back. I'm sure they deal with a lot of idiots, you have to prove to them a bit you aren't one. :)

Am I wrong in thinking that mounting the scope with a standard 2 piece 30 mm leupold mount should be within a few inches vertically at 100? All my Remington 700s were...

We all shuld listn to Shane....he is the voice of reason here.....we are all too quik to blame Savage or Leupold etc....if the wrong mounts/bases/rings are being used it wuldnt matter if it was a Panda/Bat/or savage...the scope wont line up!!!!.......the OP needs to check if the rings are in correct alighnment with the bore....as Shane stated ,there are variations in the actions that culd cause problems with aftermarket parts.......the factories hav enuff to worry about without having to teach us how to mount a scope....Roger

Just to square everything up with where this currently stands.. I tried known good rings mounts and scope from a good shooting rifle. Eliminated all variables outside of a gun issue. I'm definitely no expert but I do my research and try to do my part in getting the gun to properly shoot before jumping to conclusions. Hence this post. Maxing out the z rings and still needing more adjustment tells me there is a big issue.

Also. No negative feedback or feelings should be had towards savage. Any mass produced product will have occasional lemons. Its how its handled that shows what a company is all about. Savage has gone about this in only The most professional manner.

Wind did blow the scope right off the bench onto concrete...
Owwch! :o That would prey on my mind and I would send it in to an authorized Leupold center to have it checked off as undamaged. They may even do it sans charge as a gesture of goodwill. At the very least I would do a box test the next time out at the range. Failing that, I'm a big fan of Burris Signature Zee rings if you can find 'em.

+1 on Burris Signaure Zee Rings

Y would I do z rings and not send it out? I would have to use most of my scope adjustment and rings just to zero it at 100. Then stack an additional sloped rail for longer range to get adjustment back. I would like to shoot 300 on a regular basis and further once I get loads dialed. Plus if I sold this rifle down the road the buyer would have to be pretty understanding.

Greg I am with you on your last 4 or 5 posts 100% anything other then Savage fixing the rifle would be a bandaid (Haywired) not good! it needs reparied! I am still curious though if once hitting where you wanted it to could you bore site it,....and have the cross hairs of the scope dead on your bullseye your looking at down the tube? or was it way off?
Wayne.

I didn't boresight it to check that. Just kinda assumed it would be way out after the second set of rings and scope was consistant with previous results. I did take the bolt out and look down the tube at 50 and it looked out but lets face it. That's not a great stand alone method. When all signs point to barrel or top of action being out I kinda gotta go with it. Thanks again for another good suggestion but its on its way to savage. Scope to leupold for a quick double check and the tactical milling reticle.

Greg, I think your doing the right thing for sure, the only reason I even ask is we had a situation similar to this and it was right on when looking down the bore which is odd because it should go where pointed but I guess when the barrel is banana shaped I guess they whip them out?? anyway I am glad it's on it's way.
