Scope magnification recommendation

I have been shooting 17 HMR and 17 Hornet at ground squirrels using Weaver Classic 4-16 and Redfield Revolution 6-18. Both scopes work very well at 150 to 250 yards. I have a couple of 20 cal wildcats under construction and would like to hear what level of magnification would be preferable for shooting those little targets at up to 400 or more yards.

For them 20 cals and limited to say 500 yards or so I would use a variable in about a 32x max. most days you can't use over that because of mirage. You don't need a lot of elevation because you are not going that many minutes. My buddies have killed some with a 20 Vartarg at close to 1000 yards. They killed them pretty regularly out to 500 plus. I can shoot small groups at 1000 yards on paper with a 22x to 25x upper limit variable. I can easily aim on a 4 inch white patch with them. I like to use a scope that has good repeatability so you can click to what you need. Something like a Nightforce. Matt

So many choices...So little time. Get the best you can afford and more magnification then you think you need. You know what they say...Better to have and not need then to need and not have.
